The Alarm frontman Mike Peters has announced a very special online broadcast for World Cancer Day on Thursday, February 4.
Peters, a cancer survivor, has his own charity, the Love Hope Strength Foundation, which has raised over $1million for cancer programmes around the world and helped save more than 4,500 lives thanks to fans at gigs and festivals registering to become potential blood stem cell donors.
Now, as part of a worldwide day of action organised to reduce the global impact of cancer, Peters will spearhead an hour-long special of live and recorded performances plus inspirational interviews at 9pm GMT on February 4 via www.lovehopestrength.org.
With the help of some special guests, he will celebrate progress made in cancer control while shining a spotlight on urgent challenges that need to be overcome in the global fight against cancer.
As well as tuning in to the Love Hope Strength Big Night In, fans can also pledge support for World Cancer Day by bidding for unique rock’n’roll memorabilia donated by Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Billy Idol, Duff McKagan of Guns & Roses, and other celebrated musicians in an online auction.
The auction is started on Friday, January 15, and closes on Saturday, february 5. All funds raised through the Love Hope Strength Big Night In and associated activities will support cancer prevention and cancer care projects for underprivileged communities around the world.
“I live with leukaemia and my wife Jules recently underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy following a breast cancer diagnosis,“ said Mike Peters.
“Having received excellent care ourselves, we’ve long been advocates of working to ensure that people in low-to-middle income countries can access better cancer treatment, and we remain committed to this.
“70% of cancer deaths occur in low-to-middle income countries. Less than 30% of low-income countries have cancer treatment services available compared to 90% in high-income countries. This has to change.”
“We want to raise money through the Big Night In so we can collectively support some fantastic hospitals and grass-roots organisations which we know really need help so their patients stand a chance of receiving effective treatment when they receive a cancer diagnosis.
“We also want to use this opportunity to highlight what we can all do to help stop those preventable cancers from being killers.
“The Big Night In will be fun, and it will be relevant to everyone. We very much believe that cancer isn’t just a critical health issue, it’s a human issue that touches all of us.”
