The UK might be in its second national lockdown of 2020, but record companies don’t miss a trick when it comes to parting music-lovers from their hard-earned cash.
If splitting Record Store Day into three drop dates wasn’t enough, Friday 27 November is Black Friday – so what better excuse for loads more exclusive releases.
Although most record shops are in lockdown, you’ll be able to try to snag your wants from their website, via the phone or over social media from 6pm. Look out for the hashtag #RSDBF
Here’s 10 punk, indie and alternative titles which might grab your attention.
Beastie Boys – Some Old Bullshit (UMG). This is a compilation album originally released in 1994 which gathers several early EPs, recorded in the early 1980s, when the hip-hop legends were still part of the New York hardcore scene.
Buckcherry – Buckcherry (Real Gone Music). This is the 1999 debut release from the hard rockin’ band fronted by Josh Todd, and features the hit Lit Up. Clear with opaque red and yellow swirl vinyl for its vinyl debut, which is limited to 1,500 copies.
Chris Cornell – Patience (UMG). As frontman of Soundgarden and Audioslave, Cornell was one of the key figures of the 90s grunge movement. This cover of Patience by Guns ‘N’ Roses is released as a limited edition opaque white 7in for Black Friday RSD.
Corey Taylor/Dead Boys – All This And More (Warner Records). This 12in split single features the Slipknot singer’s version of ’70s Ohio punks the Dead Boys classic on one side, and the original on the other. It’s in coloured vinyl in a PVC sleeve.
Editors – The Back Room (Play It Again). Is it really 15 years since the Birmingham indie-rock band released their Mercury Prize-nominated debut album, featuring the singles Munich and Blood? This anniversary edition is on white vinyl.
Fountains of Wayne – Welcome Interstate Managers (Real Gone Music). It’s the most popular album by one of the finest power pop bands of all time…and it’s never been on vinyl. Originally released in 2003, it features the bands biggest hit, Stacey’s Mom, and is now presented in a 2LP set limited to 3,000 copies.
Gallon Drunk – Black Friday CD Bundle (Sartorial Records). What better way to celebrate RSD Black Friday than … er, a 3CD set? The alt-rockers from London have their early singles compiled with a live set, the spoken word soundtrack for Derek Raymond’s shocking novel I Was Dora Suarez and the CD single Grand Union Canal, complete with video. All previously available, they’ve been repackaged together in a limited edition of just 150.
Jarvis Cocker – Jarvis (Rough Trade). The Pulp frontman is releasing special vinyl editions of his first two solo records, with both coming with a bonus single. Jarvis is on split colour green vinyl and includes an etched 7in of Cunts Are Still Running The World, while second album Further Complications, on white vinyl, is joined by a black etched 12in featuring You’re In My Eyes (Discosong).
Motörhead – Ace of Spades (Sanctuary Records). It wouldn’t be RSD without a Motörhead release, so here’s a 12in reissue of their 1980 UK Christmas single Ace Of Spades, featuring the band in Santa suits! It also includes a previously unreleased instrumental remix and a holiday ornament.
U2 – Boy (UMG). Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin and produced by Steve Lillywhite, U2’s debut album was released in October 1980. Featuring the singles A Day Without Me and I Will Follow, as well as live favourites Out Of Control and The Electric Co., this limited 40th anniversary white vinyl pressing includes a double-sided poster and lyrics/credits insert.
