Angry Essex punk duo The Meffs have released the first taste of their long-awaited next album in the shape of a new single, Clowns.
Lily (guitar and vocals) and Lewis (drums & backing vocals) have taken the UK punk scene by storm since forming in 2019, with their political punk winning new fans everywhere they go.
After being invited to join Frank Turner at his 2021 Lost Evenings Festival, The Meffs played Rebellion in 2022 and 2023 and Download Festival last year.
A couple of self-released CD and a handful of singles during lockdown brought them to the attention of NOFX’s Fat Mike, who signed them to the new Bottles To The Ground imprint of his Fat Wreck Chords label.
It released their EPs Broken Britain PT. 1 and Broken Britain PT. 2, and they have been working with Frank Turner on what will be their debut album proper.
Clowns is the first track to be released from the album, whose release yet to be revealed, and it comes complete with its own video.
It sees The Meffs still railing against inequality around England, but their sound is maturing, and they are finding more confidence in their art. The guitars are now distorted and groovier.
The track is described as “Lily’s take on British politics, which will resonate with much of the gen pop in society as she highlights the reality of what’s going on – and going wrong – with the government.
“From the state of the NHS to transphobia, Lily says it how it is, which is just what you expect from The Meffs as they sing about the people, for the people.
“The Meffs have played this song live prior to its release, and from the first play it was clear this was a sing-a-long audience participation song, which fans love to get involved in just before the mosh kicks off.”
The Meffs are hitting the road with NOFX for their final Europe run, opening for Alice Cooper around England this October and joining The Interrupters for two dates in Germany this summer, as well as playing festivals around Europe.
