the sensible gray cells

Hot on the heels of The Damned‘s announcement of a 2024 UK tour, two of the band have released a Christmas single with their side project.

Guitarist Captain Sensible and bassist Paul Gray, together with Johnny Moped drummer Marty Love, make up The Sensible Gray Cells.

They’re an on-off band who released their debut album, A Postcard From Britain, way back in 2013.

That seemed to be that until 2020, when they sprang a follow-up on us in the shape of Get Back Into The World (reviewed here).

Captain Sensible gets into the festive spirit.

Now the band are back with a festive feast in the shape of a Christmas single, A Stupid Xmas, which is out on Damaged Goods Records this Friday.

It’s a limited edition, with just 500 copies on red vinyl and 500 on green, with both the A-side and B-side exclusive to this release.

A Stupid Xmas captures everything you love to hate about this special time of year, while the flip, Keep It To Yourself, sees the band in full-on armchair detective mode, taking a look at the unsolved Madeleine McCann mystery.

It’s sure to sell out quickly given the heightened interest in The Damned right now, and Damaged Goods sold out within hours of announcing the release.

You might still be able to pre-order a copy from your local record shop – but I wouldn’t hang about.

  • Vinyl fans note that a certain number of records will have a deliberate mistake hidden – a jolly wheeze inspired by some of those old Stiff Records ‘instant collector’s item’ mispressings. Good luck finding one!
