Pennsylvania punks The Menzingers have today shared an upbeat new single, Bad Actors, ahead of upcoming UK and EU dates.
The song was chosen by the American football team Philadelphia Eagles as part of the official ‘Eagles Gameday Series Soundtrack’.
Bad Actors was played in-stadium and featured on the team’s socials leading up to the 2022 Super Bowl final, further cementing the band’s hometown roots. Until today, the only way to hear it was to stream via the Eagles app.
Featuring bright guitars, melodic riffs and uplifting lyrics, the song was written during sessions for the band’s sixth studio album. 2019’s Hello Exile (reviewed here).
Singer/guitarist Tom May explains: “It’s one of the last songs we wrote for the album and finished it in the studio. It’s an ode to a dear old friend that passed.”
The Menzingers – featuring May and fellow singer/guitarist Greg Barnett, bassist Eric Keen, and drummer Joe Godino – formed as teenagers in their hometown of Scranton, PA in 2006, later relocating to Philadelphia.
After two albums on independent labels, the band switched to Epitaph debut for 2012’s masterwork On The Impossible Past, which was voted Album of the Year by Absolute Punk, Rock Sound and Punk News.
Fourth album Rented World, which followed in 2014, was praised by The New York Times as “packed with clever songwriting” and described by Stereogum as “a colossal fist-pumper”.
In February 2017, The Menzingers released fifth album After The Party, which landed on best-of-the-year lists from outlets like Clash and Noisey, with Stereogum praising its “almost unfairly well-written punk songs.”
In 2019 they released Hello Exile, followed by a re-imagined version, From Exile, a year later as the pandemic hit and they found themselves unable to tour.
