Slade were one of the most popular singles bands of the 1970s, enjoying 17 Top 20 hits and no less than six No 1s.
Noddy Holder, Dave Hill, Jim Lea and Don Powell were the biggest group in the UK, bridging the gap between glam pop and hard rock.
BMG Records has been re-releasing much of their back catalogue over the last couple of years, to the delight of collectors who can replace their worn-out old LPs.
The latest release to get the treatment is Sladest, a compilation album originally released in September 1973. It’s full of stomping anthems, featuring big riffs and even bigger choruses.
Slade could do no wrong at the time, and the album duly topped the UK charts for three weeks, achieving silver sales status in its first week and going gold by November.
The new edition of Sladest, due out on 4 November, is a limited edition blue and white splatter vinyl, and there’s also an expanded deluxe CD reissue.
The LP follows the original 14-track tracklist, including the band’s eight hit singles up to that time.
It kicks off with the classic Cum On Feel The Noize, and includes fellow No 1s Coz I Luv You, Take Me Bak ‘Ome, Mama Weer All Crazee Now and Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me.
The new expanded CD version now includes 20 songs, including the four extra songs included on the 2011 Salvo remaster and adding two more bonus tracks – the US 7in edit of Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me and Merry Xmas Everybody.
With our economy in a similar mess to the way it was when Sladest was originally released in 1973, perhaps it’s time to hear the noise again?
