EP REVIEW: Suzi Moon – Animal (Pirates Press Records)
Suzi Moon might be more familiar to most as Suzy Homewrecker, the guitarist in femme fatale Californian punk band Civet.
She’s also earned her punk rock chops in punk ‘n’ roll trio Turbulent Hearts and the short-lived all-girl trio L.A. Machina.
Now she’s struck out on her own, and this is her second solo EP, ahead of a debut album.
It’s the follow-up to her first EP Call The Shots (reviewed here) and raises the bar even higher for what to expect from the full-length.
Animal suggests that after serving her punk rock apprenticeship, Moon has really found herself as a solo artist.
She handles guitar and vocals, and is joined by Drew Champion (The Split Seconds/Glitter Trash) on lead guitar, Patti Bo on bass and Sean Peterson (The Split Seconds) on drums.
The three-track EP kicks off with Sonic Attraction, a riff-filled banger of an opener which exudes punk rock attitude, and reminds me for all the world of Joan Jett.
The second track is the sleazy rocker Animal, inspired by Suzi’s pet cat, but actually a metaphor about being a strong, independent woman, who’s very much in charge.
It slows things down a bit, but you don’t doubt her when she purrs: “I’m an animal, I’m a fucking animal, I’m the one you can’t ignore…I’m not your little pet no more.”
Just when you’re thinking this is Suzi’s best song yet along comes Gold Record Autograph, which was released as the first single from the EP.

It’s another massive, upbeat rock ‘n’ roll tune, about the pressures of playing the game to have a chance at music stardom, and the first thing you want to do after hearing it is listen to it all over again.
Suzi Moon’s debut full-length, Dumb & In Luv, is slated for release by Pirates Press later this year, and she’s due to play live dates in the UK this summer.
