Rising garage-rock duo The Courettes have announced a new album this October – and a UK tour to go with it.
Like a ‘White Stripes in reverse’ they play a heady concoction of garage, surf and ’60s girl groups, topped with riot grrrl attitude.
The Courettes are a couple, vocalist/guitarist Flavia Couri (from Brazil) and drummer/backing vocalist Martin Couri (from Denmark, where they are based).
They will release Back In Mono, their third album, on UK indie label Damaged Goods Records on October 15.
It reissued their first two albums, 2015 debut Here Are The Courettes and 2018’s We Are The Courettes, on vinyl last week.

Each is limited to 1,000 copies, or you might prefer the CD version Here We Are, which contains both albums.
Their first single for the label, Want You! Like A Cigarette, was released last year in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Radio airplay
Airplay on BBC6 Music in the UK and back home in Denmark saw the first pressing of the 7in sell out in two weeks.
A new single, Hop The Twig, was recently released as a taster for the forthcoming album.
“It is an old slang for dying, so we found it a very appropriate title for a song. Too many people had ‘hopped the twig’ this last year,” said Flavia.
“We´re big fans of Duane Eddy and all the early surf music. This riff kept coming in my head, so I started to play around it on the guitar. And then it hit me: It’s Hop The Twig!
Dark theme
“It’s always hiding behind your back, and is a pretty dark theme, but the song is more of a statement celebrating that we are still here.”
Listening to The Courettes is like putting The Ronettes and The Ramones in a room and inviting Link Wray or Duane Eddy along for a jam.
The result is a cacophony of reverb-laden guitars, loud drums, with added trashy piano, jingle bells and tambourine.
I reckon they’ll slip down a treat with fans of bands The Cramps, The Raveonettes, Snakerattlers and Ugly Fly Guys.
