Kent punks Riskee and The Ridicule have emerged from lockdown with a new single, Blue Jacket, which makes their stance on Brexit clear.
The band, who released their latest album, Body Bag Your Scene (reviewed here) on Bomber Music last year, today unveiled Blue Jacket, which refers to the restraints that leaving the EU imposes.
The song pokes fun at the ‘Brexit means Brexit at any cost’ ethos. It’s lyrically dark, yet musically happy, with a stark contrast between the disappointment and anger in the words and the optimism in the music.
“We hate Brexit,” said frontman Scott Picking. “Musically It’s most likely going to cripple UK DIY touring bands on the mainland.
“Not only that, but with the way the world is so affected right now by Covid-19, we need unity more than ever.
“Nobody had a clue what they were voting for, and people are still none the wiser and all divided.”
Riskee and The Ridicule have been a staple of the UK DIY scene for a few years now, but their attitude and unique ‘grime-punk’ appeals to fans old and new around the world.
2019 was an amazing year for the band. Body Bag Your Scene, their third album, was well received by fans and critics, while festival sets at Rebellion and Boomtown went down a storm.
Picking (vocals), Jimbo Aglony (guitars, vocals), Jordan Mann (guitars, vocals) and Matt Verrell (drums, vocals) are a gang of progressive punks who are full of fierce energy.
Musically, the band meld their genre-spanning influences with their intent to challenge preconceptions.
Like every other band, their plans for live dates in 2020 lie in ruins, but you can be sure they’ll be back on stage as soon as the world allows.
