Electronic pioneer Gary Numan today announced a major 2022 European headline tour as he prepares to release his latest album.
The former Tubeway Army singer will release Intruder, his 19th studio solo album, on BMG this Friday.
It’s tipped to be a late career classic like 2017’s dystopian epic Savage (Songs From A Broken World).
Early reviews suggest more of the same, and a European tour in support of the album was today confirmed.
It includes a first show at The SSE Arena, Wembley, since three sold-out farewell concerts there in 1981.
It’ll be his joint-largest headline UK show – a phenomenal achievement for an artist whose career spans over 40 years.
He made his name as the frontman of new wave band Tubeway Army. They enjoyed a No 1 album in 1979 with Replicas and a chart-topping single in Are ‘Friends’ Electric.
That success continued when he went solo, and he had two further No 1 albums in The Pleasure Principle (1979) and Telekon (1980).
Cars, We Are Glass and I Die: You Die were big hits, and he enjoyed more success into the ’80s and beyond.
Loyal fans
Although he disappeared from the mainstream, he maintained a loyal fanbase. He returned to the UK Top 20 in 2013 after a 30-year gap with the album Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind).
The stunning comeback was complete when Savage (Songs From A Broken World) reached No 2 four years later.
Now, after a career in which he has sold over 10 million records, Gary Numan can’t wait to play for an audience again.
“To say I’ve missed touring would be a colossal understatement. It’s the life I chose when I was a teenager, so not being able to tour the world has been very difficult.
“But now things are changing once again and the next UK tour has been announced. I am as excited as I was when all this started for me a lifetime ago. More so in fact.
Soak up emotion
“I can’t wait to walk out onto a stage again, to hear the roar of the crowd, the ear-shattering volume of the music, to be bathed in light and soak up that emotion. It’s what I’m here for.”
Fans will have to wait until 2022 to see the album played live. But Numan and his band will perform a global live streaming event, Intruder: The Worldwide Concert Premiere, on Thursday, June 17.
They will perform several songs from Intruder for the first time, as well as a selection from his impressive career. Tickets are available HERE.
