Shame, one of the UK’s brightest up and coming post-punk bands, have announced a November 2021 tour as they prepare to release their new album.
Drunk Tank Pink will be released on January 15 via the Dead Oceans label. They recently shared the video for new single Water In The Well, the latest track released from the album, after Alphabet, Nigel Hitter and Snow Day.
Formed in 2014 when the five-piece were still teenagers, Shame marked themselves out as ones to watch with their riotous debut Songs Of Praise.
They had already toured with the likes of Fat White Family and Slaves, and early singles The Lick/Gold Hole, Tasteless, Concrete and Visa Vulture earned them a growing reputation.
Their debut album, released in January 2018, reached No 32 in the UK charts. The follow-up, produced by James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco and The Last Shadow Puppets, is bigger and bolder, and sees them step outside their comfort zone of constant touring
Formed while still at school, Shame cut their teeth in the pubs and small venues of South London, and, helped by the success of their breakthrough debut album, became one of the most celebrated new bands in Britain.
For the first time, the coronavirus pandemic forced them to take a break from touring last year and frontman Charlie Steen admits he found it difficult.
“You become very aware of yourself and when all of the music stops, you’re left with the silence,” reflects Steen. “And that silence is a lot of what this record is about.”
He addresses the psychological toll life in the band has taken on him; the disintegration of his relationship, the loss of a sense of self, and the growing identity crisis both the band and an entire generation were feeling.
“The common theme when I was catching up with my mates was this identity crisis everyone was having,” reflects Steen. “No one knows what the fuck is going on.”
Guitarist Sean Coyle-Smith barricaded himself in his bedroom and obsessively deconstructed his approach to playing and making music, which explains the new songs’ sense of panic and crackling intensity.
