No Use For A Name were one of THE most successful and prolific acts to come out of the ’90s skate-punk scene.
Formed in San Jose, California, in 1986, they sold more than a million albums before calling it a day after the tragic death of their frontman Tony Sly in 2012, aged just 41.
They evolved from being a scrappy hardcore band into a powerhouse whose melodic punk earned them a place on the main stage of the famous Warped Tour and saw MTV play their videos.
They signed to Fat Wreck Chords in the mid-90s, and their 1995 album ¡Leche con Carne! cemented them as a successful band for years to come.
It bore a hit song, Soul Mate, which landed them in the alternative radio charts, and set the stage for later melodic punk bands like Blink 182 to follow in their footsteps.
Members came and went, including Chris Shiflett on guitar before he accepted an offer to join Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters, but as singer and main songwriter there was no doubt Sly was the beating heart of the band.
In 2002 they released their poppiest effort, Hard Rock Bottom, full of upbeat tempos and radio-friendly melodies, and their final studio album came in 2008, the slightly darker The Feel Good Album Of The Year, which had more urgency and bite.
Fat released Rarities Vol. 1: The Covers in 2017, as the first NUFAN album since Tony Sly’s passing. As the name suggests, it consisted of covers recorded over the course of the band’s career.
The tracklist included their takes on songs as varied as The Vapors’ Turning Japanese, Depeche Mode’s Enjoy The Silence, Cheap Trick’s Dream Police, The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York, the Laverne & Shirley theme tune Make Our Dreams Come True, and The Munsters Theme!
Now the label has revealed that after spending three years scouring every NUFAN recording it could get its hands on, Rarities Vol. 2 – The Originals is ready to roll.
Available on CD, LP and digital, it contains 15 tracks, including rarities and previously unreleased demos. Due for release on February 12, it’s available to pre-order now HERE.
