ALBUM REVIEW: Hot Rockets – Planet in the Sky (self-released)
Hot Rockets are a three-piece punk-influenced band from Whitby, North Yorkshire, who have created quite a buzz since forming three years ago.
Gigging hard around the north and beyond, they have done things the old-fashioned way, building up quite a following with their sleazy riff ‘n’ roll.
Their previous release, the six-track We Have Ignition EP from 2018, was excellent, so to say I was looking forward to this first full-length is an understatement.
I’m pleased to report that it does not disappoint, as it’s full to the brim with planet-sized riffs which will make your speakers shake.
Half of the songs, such as Drill It In Your Head, Masterplan, Hot Rockets and Mr Remote Control, were already regulars in their set before coronavirus brought live music as we know it to a shuddering halt.
They don’t stray far from the tried and tested Rockets’ formula; frontman Steve laying down huge riffs, bassist Heath rumbling away in the background, and hard-hitting drummer Paul smashing the hell out of his kit at the back.
Monsters – another of the songs which they had a chance to try out live – is one of the standout tracks, with the sort of riff you’d expect to hear on an AC/DC record, while Local, also a highlight, is about the struggle to be accepted in a small town.
In truth, there’s not a weak track here, and I like this album more every time I listen to it. I can’t wait to see Hot Rockets play these songs live again now I’m familiar with them.
