Sunderland punk band Slalom D have today released a new single, Same Refrain, as the latest taste of their forthcoming third album.
The five-piece, formed in 2018, have become firm favourites on the North East punk scene, and appearances at the last three Rebellion festivals in Blackpool expanded their fanbase even further.
Same Refrain, available from their Bandcamp page, is their first new music since August 2025, when they released Harbour Walls, a celebration of their home city which blended nostalgia with resilience.
The new song is inspired by vocalist Fiona Duncan’s relationship with her dad, who has dementia.
The lyrics will strike a chord with anyone who’s ever had a loved one with the condition, as she sings: “You’re living in the past now, those tales are pure spun gold/But those stories go on forever, They’re never ever getting old.”
Guitarist Antony Bircham said: “When we’ve played it live we’ve had a really positive reaction to it, especially from those who’ve dealt with dementia in their own families.”
The track is taken from the forthcoming album I Choose My Own Way To Burn, which is due to be released later this year.
Slalom D released their debut album Happy Skies (reviewed here) in 2021 and followed it with Waltz Into Anarchy (reviewed here) in 2023.
They’ve had a change of personnel since then, with Bircham joining on guitar and Lisa Lindstedt taking over on keys, but they remain unashamedly opinionated, left-wing, anti-fascist and working class.
