Midlands punks MC16 have released another new single today as they continue to work on their debut album.
Polytechnic is the latest taste of new material from the three-piece, who believe music should challenge, confront, question and entertain.
They play a short, sharp shock take on classic punk rock – a whirlwind of snarl and bite, mixed with a ragged melody and street-wise energies.
MC16 released their debut EP Outvoted By Robots (reviewed here) in 2019, and a mini-album … No Blood No Guilt collected all their early releases in 2022.
Polytechnic is the fourth single they have released in the last year, following Decent Pubs And Murder in May 2023, One From Another in September, and Data Donors in December.
Explaining the thinking behind Polytechnic, guitar-playing vocalist Carson says: “Because everything is getting quicker and more instant, the assumption is this is positive evolution and the world is much better than it was. No better time to be alive and all that! Look forward, surge forward, there is no need to look sideways.”
Drummer Duffy jumps in: “Polytechnic was once the beacon of learning, but who is learning the most and applying their knowledge the best? Scammers, criminals, corrupt public officials and politicians. I don’t want to leave this world knowing I gave more money to scammers than charities!”
“But they don’t feel guilty do they?” adds bassist Quinn. “I feel guilty if I stay in bed when I have got too much to do, and I am made to feel guilty if I ask the boss for a week off work. My life is a guilt trip!”
The song was recorded with Dave Draper (The Wildhearts, The Professionals) at the Old Cider Press Studios in Worcestershire, and its video has again been created by Hutch Films.
MC16 have played a string of live dates this year, including support slots with 999 and Resistance 77, and are working on their first full-length album, for release later this year.
