DIY feminist punks Lambrini Girls have announced their return with ferocious new single God’s Country.
The song, out now on City Slang, is their follow-up to last year’s acclaimed debut EP You’re Welcome (reviewed here), and was premiered earlier this week by BBC Radio 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq.
Lambrini Girls, originally from Brighton, are Phoebe Lunny (vocals & guitar) and Lilly Macieira (bass), plus drummer Banksy*.
They’ve made a name for themselves through incendiary live performances and support from the likes of BBC Radio 6 Music, NME, CLASH and Kerrang! magazine.
The video for God’s Country was a DIY effort filmed by the band around London with friend Jessie Morgan.
Messed up
They wanted to highlight how messed up everything is with contrasting statements, such as filming outside Buckingham Palace and showing poverty elsewhere.
Lambrini Girls said: “God’s Country is our long-overdue call-out of the government and rise of the far right. We wrote this a few months back, when the political landscape had evidently reached a global boiling point.
“Great Britain. Think colonial, shit-hole, chunk of land. Thriving off unhinged nationalism, fed to us by the right red hand of unelected prime ministers. Despite this, we have the audacity to call our country ‘Great’. So we ask you, ‘Are you sure?’
“We could deep dive into inspirations and influences- but the song’s about politics, not us. We hope the song speaks for itself. Rishi, Cameron, Cummings, Starmer – you’re all on our shit list.”
Live dates
Lambrini Girls will play their biggest headline to date at London’s SCALA on 13 June. Tickets will go on sale tomorrow at 10am HERE.
Next month the band head State-side for the first time to perform at SXSW, and this summer will hit Wide Awake, 2000 Trees, Y Not?, Reading & Leeds Festival and Manchester Psych Fest, among others.
