ALBUM REVIEW: Stanis – Living Has Consequences (self-released)
Stanis are a melodic hardcore band from Bologna, Italy, who were formed in 2016, inspired by the likes of Propagandhi, NOFX, Lagwagon and Good Riddance.
To date they have released two EPs, and debut album Tales from a Modern Society (2019).
With seven tracks, this latest release falls somewhere between those two stools, and is probably a mini-album, but still has much to commend it. There are seven tracks, each featuring “To” as the first word in the title.
The album’s sound is fast, urgent and natural, steering away from any kind of overproduction so as to keep the whole record as authentic and as close to the live experience as possible.
The songs are intended to capture feelings and sentiments, as evidenced by their titles, eg To Realize, To Live. To Be Short, clocking in at just 30 seconds, certainly lives up to its name.
To Cover sees the trio tackling Grau Grau Grau, the theme song from 1979 Italian adventure-comedy film I’m for the Hippopotamus (bizarrely starring ex-boxer Joe Bugner!), and originally sung by its stars Terence Hill and Bud Spencer.
The standout song on the album is To Forget, where they celebrate the joys of drinking a few beers with friends and waking up with your face in the cat’s litter tray! 7/10
