Fiddlehead – the Boston MA post-hardcore supergroup featuring members of Have Heart and Basement, among others – have announced their second full-length album.
Between The Richness will be released on May 21 by Run For Cover Records, and finds Fiddlehead expanding on their dynamic blend of hardcore energy and catchy melody. Expect massive hooks, and some thoughtful, heart-searching lyrics from vocalist Pat Flynn.
Fiddlehead have shared the album’s anthemic first single Million Times – the perfect introduction to Between The Richness’s sing-along-ready choruses and compelling words.
The album is the follow-up to 2018’s Springtime & Blind, which followed Flynn coming to grips with the death of his father. The new record explores the ever-presence of grief, but with Flynn writing from a drastically different place.
Between The Richness
“These massive things happened in my life between the first record and this record,” he says. “It just so happened that I ended up getting married, I had a child, and it was around the 10-year anniversary of my father’s passing.
“The record is called Between The Richness because it’s important to me to explore the weird feeling of happiness and sadness, because that’s just where I am right now. My son’s name is Richard and my father’s name is Richard, so it’s literally between the two of them – it’s the richness of life and the richness of death.”
Fiddlehead weren’t supposed to make a second record. But they weren’t supposed to make their first one either. Formed in 2014 in what Flynn describes as “a deeply, laughably depressing part of my life,” the post-hardcore supergroup began with modest intentions.
Flynn and his then-roommate, guitarist Alex Dow, decided to work on some songs, and with UK post-hardcore outfit Basement having just broken up, guitarist Alex Henery entered the fold. Joined by others, they wrote what would become the Out Of The Bloom EP.
Its five tracks established what Fiddlehead would be: a band blending elements of post-hardcore, post-punk and classic ’80s emo into something that felt distinctly theirs.
Touring after the release of debut album Springtime & Blind, the band saw they were “resonating with people in a really meaningful way”, says Flynn. One of the main reasons was his open-hearted exploration of his father’s passing.
