Punk lifers The Casualties have broken an eight-year hiatus with a blistering new single, People Over Power, their first release via Hellcat Records.
Formed in New York City in 1990, their ferocious street-punk is the voice of the disenfranchised, the disillusioned and the dispossessed of this planet.
With a mission to revive the sound of punk pioneers like The Exploited and Sex Pistols, they turn scathing denouncements of authority into frantic anthems of resistance.
They have released 11 full-length studio albums, three EPs and three live records, and, as you’d expect with a band of such longevity, members have come and gone over the years.
Original frontman Jorge Herrera retired from touring in 2017, and was replaced by David Rodriguez, vocalist with The Krum Bums, who sang on their most recent album, 2018’s Written In Blood.
Now they’re back, with Rodriguez and long-time guitarist Jake Kolatis and drummer Marc ‘Meggers’ Eggers joined by most recent recruit, Doug Wellmon on bass.
They are heading to the UK on March 29 to play Scarborough Punk Festival, and will return to Europe in June for a run of festival and headline shows.
People Over Power is a typically abrasive right-hook to the chin of the system, with its roaring bark a call to everyone to fight back against injustice.
“We’re getting stomped by the world, by the government, by the bad news,” said Rodriguez. “We want systemic change, total transformation, degradation to the state. ‘People over Power’: It’s as simple as it sounds.”
Meggers added: “It’s a protest song through and through. We want the vibe to be: ‘You listen, get angry, get your crew together, and get out on the streets’.”
