Legendary Irish pop-punks The Undertones are hitting the road again to celebrate the 45th anniversary of their classic album Hypnotised.
The band are playing three shows this December in Nottingham, Newcastle and London to celebrate their second album, which was released on 21 April 1980. It reached No 6 on the UK Albums Chart, becoming their most successful record.
A commercial and critical success, Hypnotised has lost none of its impact or energy. It includes classic tracks like More Songs About Chocolate And Girls, There Goes Norman and Tearproof, as well as the hit singles My Perfect Cousin and Wednesday Week.
The Undertones will mark the anniversary with a special tour including the following dates:
Thursday 4 December: Boiler Shop, Newcastle, with special guest John Otway
Friday 5 December: Rock City, Nottingham, with special guests The Men They Couldn’t Hang and Headsticks
Saturday 6 December: O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London, with special guests The Frank And Walters.
Formed in Derry, Northern Ireland, in the mid ’70s, The Undertones released their debut single Teenage Kicks in 1978 on Terri Hooley’s Good Vibrations label in Belfast.
It came to the attention of taste-making Radio 1 DJ John Peel, who famously played it twice in a row on his show and became a champion of the band.
They went on to sign to Sire Records, and enjoyed a string of hits, including Get Over You, Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer, You’ve Got My Number (Why Don’t You Use It?), and It’s Going To Happen! before splitting in 1983.
The band reformed in 1999, with four of the five original members reuniting, and Paul McLoone taking over vocals after singer Feargal Sharkey declined to join them.
They’ve been touring ever since, releasing two albums of new material, and this year they’ve released their very first live album, featuring old and new songs. It’s currently only available on vinyl and at shows.
