EP REVIEW: The Undaclass – Defiance EP (Chaos Control)
The Undaclass are a three-piece from Newcastle who have been doing their best to keep the spirit of Motorhead alive since 2019.
They have two albums to their name, 2021’s debut A Bitter Taste of Britain, and last year’s follow-up, The Rise Of The Undaclass (reviewed here).
Denni (guitar and vocals), Paul (bass) and Sean (drums) play hard and fast, and they’re back with a new EP, featuring three fresh slices of tasty punk rock ‘n’ roll.
Title track Defiance kicks things off, and it’s a typical Undaclass song, with dirty riffs, a locked-in rhythm section and Denni’s trademark gruff vocals.
It’s certainly defiant as he warns: “Not long ’til we’re coming for you/Nothing your fucking armies can do/We’re the people and we don’t give a damn/We show the fight every day.“
Something To Savour is even more frantic, going off like a charging bull, and it doesn’t relent as Denni growls: “Stand up, be strong, gimme something to savour, I’ll keep it for later” They’ve rarely sounded more punky, and I like this song and its buzzsaw guitar a lot.
Track three, Get Off Your Arse, needs little explanation. Pummelling drums and a rumbling bassline which the Dead Kennedys would be proud of pave the way for a piercing guitar riff, and we’re off. It’s slower than the previous track, but a powerful call to take positive action to change your own life for the better.
The Undaclass are one of those bands who sound better every time you hear them, especially live, and this EP will do nicely until they get round to recording album number three.
