ALBUM REVIEW: The Toy Dolls \u2013 Episode XIII\n(Secret Records)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Forty\nyears into their career, The Toy Dolls<\/strong>\naren\u2019t exactly going to be reinventing the wheel, and I\u2019m pleased to say it\u2019s\nbusiness as usual for the trio, who were formed in Sunderland back in 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is\nthe 13th<\/sup> studio album from the band who put the fun into punk with\nsome irreverent songs and frankly brilliant lyrics at a time when it was\nbecoming ever so serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Episode XIII<\/strong> sees the\nlong-established line-up of Olga<\/strong>\n(guitar and vocals), Tommy Goober<\/strong>\n(bass) and The Amazing Mr Duncan<\/strong>\n(drums) serve up 11 tracks of fast-paced punk which will leave you with a smile\non your face at the very least, and possibly make you laugh out loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Toy Dolls celebrate their 40th anniversary this year.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Lotharios\nand liars seem to have been on Olga\u2019s mind when penning this album, with\ntypically entertaining results. After the obligatory intro things kick off in\nearnest with the bigamist\u2019s tale Arthur\nClark\u2019s A Dark Horse<\/strong> (\u201cArthur\u2019s in a world of sin\/He\u2019s bonked more birds\nthan Errol Flynn\u201d). More bullshit abounds on Benny The Boxer<\/strong>, who claims he beat Henry Cooper back in the day (\u201cBoxing\nskill, he\u2019s got nil, he can\u2019t box, it\u2019s bollocks\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waffle Woman<\/strong>,\ninspired by the sight of a mountain of said snacks being consumed in a Belgian\ncaf\u00e9 contains the wonderful line \u201cshe was such a shapely spouse, until she hit\nthat waffle house\u201d, while Knickers Off\nIn Mykonos<\/strong> and Senor Benidorm<\/strong> are\nboth about the Shirley Valentine-types who go looking for love on sunshine\nholidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Toy\nDolls early classic She\u2019s A Worky Ticket<\/strong>\nis given a sympathetic re-working, while The\nLaptop Lifter<\/strong> is a salutary warning about leaving your computer unattended\nin a public place, and Christine\u2019s\nClothes<\/strong> about a cross-dressing acquaintance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Toy Dolls have just released their 13th studio album on Secret Records.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Richard Clayderman\u2019s A Creep<\/strong> is a surprisingly\nvitriolic take-down of the celebrated pianist, of whom Olga\u2019s evidently not a\nfan: \u201cRichard makes grannies gulp and blush\/French blonde knob\/He ain\u2019t no\nBobby Crush\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A couple\nof instrumentals prove yet again what a fine guitarist Olga is, in the shape of\nthe traditional Latin standard El\nCumbanchero<\/strong> and Until Next Time<\/strong>,\nwhich sounds like it should soundtrack a \u201870s cop drama set in Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a nutshell then, Olga\u2019s musings on everyday life continue to entertain and amuse, and I\u2019d love to see some of these songs slotted into their set for the 40<\/strong><\/a>th<\/strong><\/a><\/sup> anniversary gigs they\u2019re playing next year<\/strong><\/a>. If you\u2019re a convert to The Toy Dolls\u2019 sense of the absurd, you\u2019ll dig this groove baby. 7\/10.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
