ALBUM REVIEW: For Family And Flag Vol 2 (Pirates Press Records)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Few record labels do compilations as well as Pirates Press Records, and that’s purely down to the strength and variety of bands on its roster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s become something of a tradition for the label to celebrate landmark releases with a very special compilation album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Release No 200 was a triple LP, One Family, One Flag<\/em>, and its 300th was For Family And Flag Volume 1<\/em> (reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diversity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

PPR400 is another excellent collection of bands who show the label’s sheer diversity of talent, from working class soul to street-punk and reggae to raging hardcore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only three of the bands featured here were on Vol 1<\/em>, and five of the tracks are previously unreleased, making this LP the only way to get them (for now at least).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The returners are NYC ska stalwarts The Slackers<\/strong>, Seattle streetpunks The Drowns<\/strong>, who were newcomers to the label last time round, but are about to release their long-awaited third album, and Pirates stalwarts Noi!se<\/strong>, whose contribution is exclusive to this release.<\/p>\n\n\n

There are also previously-released gems from the likes of Teenage Bottlerocket<\/strong>, Suzi Moon<\/strong> (whose excellent debut album is reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>), DeeCracks<\/strong> (whose 20th anniversary compilation is reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>) and Stomper 98<\/strong> (whose new self-titled album is reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s a clutch of more recent signings, like Sweat<\/strong>, Starving Wolves<\/strong> and Brigata Vendetta<\/strong> (featuring former members of Harrington Saints<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flores Y Fuego<\/strong> fly the flag for Mexican hardcore with So Tu Voz<\/em>, from their debut album (reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>), while at the opposite end of the musical spectrum are northern soul crew The Inciters<\/strong>, who invite us to Bring Back The Weekend<\/em> from the album of the same name (reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n

Scottish troubadour Billy Liar<\/strong>, who recently released his first album for PPR (reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>), contributes one of its standout tracks, Hogmanay<\/em>, while Hunting Lions<\/strong> cough up The City<\/em> from the ‘Dark<\/em>‘ side of their debut EP (reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My favourite tracks are Hunting Lions<\/strong>‘ The City<\/em>, The Drowns<\/em>‘ Just the Way She Goes<\/em>, which offers another mouth-watering taste of their forthcoming third album, due out in February, and Hello Outsider<\/em> by Canadian band Territories<\/strong>, from their excellent new album Colder Now<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
