ALBUM REVIEW: Holy Moly and The Crackers <\/strong>\u2013 Take A Bite (Pink Lane Records) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eight years after they formed in\nNewcastle as a self-confessed \u2018ragtag folk band\u2019, Holy Moly and The Crackers\nhave released a third album of \u201criotous party music for the masses\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having grown from three core members\nto first a quartet and now a six-piece, it\u2019s a thrilling reminder of how good\nmusic can be when delivered with honesty, passion and conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Folk still lies at the heart of what\nHoly Moly do, but their sound also contains jazz, funk, rock \u2018n\u2019 soul and\ngypsy-punk of the kind served up by Gogol Bordello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lead single All I Got Is You grabs you\nby the lapels from the start, as vocalist Ruth Patterson\u2019s gorgeous voice soars\nand swoops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She shares vocal duties with Conrad\nBird, who also contributes guitar and trumpet, while Rosie Bristow is also\nprominent on accordion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The addition of guitar, bass and drums\nhas given them a much fuller sound than their earliest days, but the folk\ninfluences remain, and it\u2019s an addictive brew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upside Down is another swashbuckling\nsong, while Kiss Me Before You Go sees the co-vocalists trade lines, all set\nover an addictive eastern-influenced beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naked In Budapest, another\nBohemian-flavoured song, is perhaps the standout track of the set, and the\nrefrain of \u201cwe\u2019re not going home\u201d will be stuck in your head for days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This groove-laden album is full of\nsuch infectious songs, and feels fresh and alive \u2013 perhaps because it was\nrecorded song by song, with the band only moving onto the next once they were\nsatisfied with the last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, it\u2019s a record that anyone who loves good music should add to their collection. Don\u2019t just take my word for it though: buy it, and then go to see Holy Moly live, where they\u2019ll truly blow your socks off. 8\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
