After all, what’s better than growing up with a band’s music from an early age, and watching them develop as you do?

All was not well, however; reports were filtering through to the UK of a new virus which had originated in China and was sweeping through Italy. Three weeks later Britain was plunged into an unprecedented lockdown.

For most people, although life was a little scary, it meant time spent at home with their families. For a touring band like the Bar Stool Preachers, it meant that after five years of hard work, the rug had been well and truly pulled from under their feet, as the live music industry closed around them.

The Bar Stool Preachers playing live at Kubix Festival in Sunderland last year. We’d written about 50 songs, picked our favourite 13, and only six have made it through, as covid and lockdown meant we had time to go back and keep writing more.

“We’re really proud of the songs we’ve chosen for Above The Static, and hopefully people will like them too.”

I venture that two of the songs released as singles so far, Call Me On The Way Home and All Turned Blue, are far more commercial than anything the band have previously released, and Tom agrees.

“That’s what the record company advised us to do, to introduce us to a wider audience, and they have a history of breaking bands, so we listened to them. But it’s a five-single campaign in the run-up to the album’s release, and the other three are far more typical Bar Stool Preachers songs.

“The album is 100% not commercial. It’s a big mix of edgy, risky punk songs, bits of ska, bits of rock ‘n’ roll, and lots of hope.”

Homecoming

Lockdown meant the Bar Stool Preachers couldn’t tour, which has been their raison d’etre since they formed in 2015, but they got back on the horse with a set at the hastily-arranged HITS 25 all-dayer, which replaced the cancelled 2021 Rebellion Punk Festival.

And it felt like something of a homecoming when they were able to return in triumph to Blackpool last year, headlining the Casbah Stage on the Thursday night, in front of a packed crowd, with many more people unable to get in.

I was one of the lucky ones who did get in, and Tom smiles as I tell him his band’s expanded seven-man line-up sounded HUGE, with Ray Waters (Zipheads) and Karl Smith (Jaya The Cat) adding lots more oomph to original six-stringer Tom Gibbs’ riffing.

Both guitarists are now permanent members of the band, whose line-up is completed by bass player Karl ‘Bungle’ Jeffery, Alex Hay on keys and drummer Alex ‘Whibbs’ Whibley-Conway.

Arena-sized songs

“The thing that has changed is that we’re writing songs that are meant for a bigger arena, because that’s where we hope to be playing them. It’s a long way from our older material, which was written on an acoustic guitar sat at a kitchen table.”

As an example of how things have changed for the band, Tom cites a date in Bremen, in August 2022 when they supported German punk band Die Toten Hosen, playing to 35,000 people.

Above The Static is the Bar Stool Preachers’ third album and their first for Pure Noise Records.

“We played with them in 2017, when we were a baby band, and before that show we were bricking it. That was pretty fucking special – life affirming really.

“Before Covid the band had got to the point where we had quit our day jobs, toured Europe and America, and decided that was the life we wanted – the chance to be creative as a lifestyle and make music that mattered to people.

Pure Noise

“Now we’re back to where we were in 2020, but this time we’ve got Pure Noise behind us, with a touring budget, PR budget, and radio budget, and we’re not just reaching out to the same people we were before. Running round the world with me best mates, making trouble and making music – I’ll settle for that.

The Bar Stool Preachers get down with their fans at Trillians in Newcastle.
