{"id":8736,"date":"2023-02-17T19:54:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-17T19:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=8736"},"modified":"2023-02-22T19:56:36","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T19:56:36","slug":"grade-2-release-the-best-record-of-their-career-with-their-self-titled-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=8736","title":{"rendered":"Grade 2 release the best record of their career with their self-titled album"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">ALBUM REVIEW: Grade 2 &#8211; Grade 2 (Hellcat Records)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grade 2 are a three-piece streetpunk band from Ryde on the Isle of Wight, and this is their fourth album proper. And if there&#8217;s a better album released in 2023 I can&#8217;t wait to hear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sid Ryan (vocals and bass), Jack Chatfield, (guitar and vocals) and Jacob Hull (drums) formed the band when they were 14, and learned to play doing Clash and Jam covers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honing their own sound, they released two albums on Contra Records &#8211; <em>The Mainstream View<\/em> (2016) and <em>Break The Routine<\/em> (2017) &#8211; before switching to Hellcat for 2019&#8217;s <em>Graveyard Island<\/em> (reviewed here).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was produced by Rancid&#8217;s Tim &#8216;Timebomb&#8217; Armstrong, and he&#8217;s back at the helm for this one, and it&#8217;s fair to say he&#8217;s coaxed the album of their career out of the trio.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"428\" width=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/grade2-2022-ph-Ryan-Mackfall-1024x684.jpeg?resize=640%2C428\" alt=\"grade 2\" class=\"wp-image-8632\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Isle of Wight streetpunks Grade 2. Pic Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 15 tracks they produce a blend of raw punk power and melody which should appeal to a new generation of fans &#8211; remember they&#8217;re only in their mid-20s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few bands do dual vocals as well as Grade 2, and the excellent production gives Sid and Jack&#8217;s voices plenty of space to be heard, despite the glorious fucking racket they&#8217;re making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Judgement Day<\/em> is a blistering opener which is over and done in a minute and a half, and it&#8217;s followed by <em>Fast Pace<\/em>, about the way everyone seems determined to live their lives these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Under The Streetlight<\/em>, one of four songs released as singles before the album came out, is next, and it&#8217;s an anthem of positivity, about enjoying the support of friends, family or a community when times are tough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Grade 2 - &quot;Under the Streetlight&quot;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HhsRypa6d38?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Doing Time<\/em>, comparing the 9 to 5 grind with being behind bars, and the slightly ska-tinged <em>Midnight Ferry<\/em>, about returning to reality with a thump after a great night out, were both fine trailers for the album, as was <em>Brassic<\/em>, about being skint &#8211; something many can identify with in these times of austerity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But although they were a good taster for the full-length, for me they&#8217;re nowhere near the best songs on this album, not by a long chalk. <em>Don&#8217;t Stand Alone<\/em> is a contender, with its swaggering riffs, infectious chorus and messages of hope and friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So is <em>Parasite<\/em>, a song so furious it could strip paint off walls. I&#8217;ve never heard Grade 2 sound angrier, but my pick of the bunch is <em>Celine<\/em>, two and a half joyful minutes about falling in love and living for the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is Grade 2&#8217;s most-complete album yet, and the best record I&#8217;ve heard this year. I can&#8217;t wait to hear these songs live. <strong>9\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grade 2 are touring the UK from March 3-19, before heading out to Europe.
