ALBUM REVIEW: Martha – Love Keeps Kicking (Big Scary Monsters)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Durham indie-punks Martha are back with a third album of their pathos-soaked indie-pop, on a new label after the demise of previous one Fortuna! Pop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The four-piece have\nlong been a staple of the UK\u2019s DIY scene, and their melodic punk-pop is easy to\nfall for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band comprises J.\nCairns and Daniel Ellis on guitars, Naomi Griffin on bass, and Nathan\nStephens-Griffin on drums, and Martha is very much a democracy, with all four\nmembers singing and writing the songs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martha are onto their third album of melodic DIY indie pop-punk<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This is a break-up\nalbum, written from the heart, and although it\u2019s less immediate than 2014\u2019s\nCourting Strong and 2016\u2019s Blisters In The Pit Of My Heart, after a few listens\nI love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across 11 tracks, the Pity Me quartet show that while the world seems to be falling apart, there is still plenty worth fighting for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It starts in typical jaunty fashion with Heart Is Healing and Sight For Sore Eyes, but moves up a gear on the third track when Naomi takes lead vocals for Into This, singing \u201csometimes we seem close but at other times it\u2019s like you\u2019ve never met me\u201d, and \u201cyou only want to kiss me when you\u2019ve had a drink\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martha classics in the making<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The next two songs are, for me, among the best the band have written. Wrestlemania VIII is another love song, with one of their catchiest choruses: \u201cThey say absence makes the heart grow fonder, when we first met it felt like we\u2019d been friends for so much longer\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DIY indie punks Martha are from Pity Me, Durham<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Mini Was A Preteen\nArsonist tells the true story of Michael \u2018Mini\u2019 Cooper, a Craghead lad who was\nlocked up for starting fires, and, at 11 years old, was the subject of a  BBC documentary examining his life as an\ninhabitant of a young offenders\u2019 home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMini was a rebel and\na tearaway, He wouldn\u2019t say his prayers and he wouldn\u2019t behave, He\ncould sing a song, he could write a play, But they gave him the belt and\nsaid he\u2019d never be saved,\u201d are among the best lyrics the band have penned, and\nthe song is dedicated to Mini, and to the silenced and the caged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another standout track is Orange Juice, another Martha classic, though in truth there\u2019s not a bad song here, or even an average one. 8\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
