{"id":8550,"date":"2023-01-26T10:43:40","date_gmt":"2023-01-26T10:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=8550"},"modified":"2023-01-30T10:43:47","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T10:43:47","slug":"dealing-with-damage-explore-new-ground-on-second-album-use-the-daylight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=8550","title":{"rendered":"Dealing With Damage explore new ground on second album Use The Daylight"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">ALBUM REVIEW: Dealing With Damage &#8211; Use The Daylight <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">(Little Rocket Records)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dealing With Damage<\/strong> are a DIY post-punk band from London who formed in 2015, and <em>Use The Daylight <\/em>is their second album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Written and recorded mid-pandemic with all the attendant challenges, it&#8217;s the follow-up to 2019&#8217;s debut <em>Ask The Questions<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ed Wenn (vocals and guitar), Andy Myers (guitar and vocals), Paul Grier (bass) and James Sherry (drums) have all played in other bands, so bring a host of influences to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have shared stages with the likes of Soulside, Moving Targets, Messthetics, Diaz Brothers, Danger!Man and Ruts DC among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standout track is the lead single, <em>John&#8217;s Gone<\/em>, a tribute to John Hannon, the producer they began making the record with, before he died suddenly in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can sense the sadness as Ed sings: &#8220;John&#8217;s gone. Too soon gone\/We can&#8217;t ask John\/We wanted you to record our song \u2026We wanted you to have this song; from us to you.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dealing With Damage - John&#039;s Gone\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4SGWyRiHVOk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pat Collier took over production duties, and has helped the band deliver a much broader collection of sounds and styles than their debut album, which was part old school 70s UK punk and part 80s US hardcore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s a big departure from what DWD have done before right away, as the album opens with an acoustic song, <em>Sunrise<\/em>, featuring guest vocals from the Steve Ignorant Band&#8217;s Carol Hodge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Collaborators<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She&#8217;s the first of several collaborators who appear on <em>Use The Daylight<\/em> &#8211; another change to what the band have done before. The album also closes with a similar piece called <em>Sunset<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s back to service as usual with track two, <em>Walking Backwards Into The Future<\/em>, which reminds me very much of the excellent MC16. Pic: Alexis Fleisig.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things get all political in <em>Bigots vs The Mad Professor<\/em>, a short, sharp hardcore blast about how racism trickles down from right-wing leaders. It would have fit nicely onto the first album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strident Rinse Repeat Rinse, about how divisive, disruptive figures can upset society, is bristling with anger as Ed sneers: &#8220;See no evil\/Hear no evil\/Do lots of evil.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>We Make Bombs To Feel Safe<\/em> is another standout track, about how mankind is, by turns, superbly innovative and stunningly stupid. It&#8217;s a brooding mid-tempo song influenced by Fugazi, and a good example of what Ed means when he says &#8220;We had to learn to play quietly on this album.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Hardcore rant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My favourite collaboration is the hardcore rant <em>Letter From Yootha<\/em>, a co-write with London &#8216;menopause-core&#8217; trio Yootha Today, about the changes experienced by women as they enter middle age. You can almost feel the despair as they ask: &#8220;When will I come out the other side\/And feel like myself again?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>First, They Ignore You<\/em> was inspired by lockdown, and is about the importance of protest, and not giving up, while <em>Seek Shelter <\/em>urges everyone to be better informed, while checking your sources in this age of post-truth news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are more strident guitars on <em>Write It Down<\/em>, which urges creative types to capture their inspirational ideas before they forget them, and the album closes out with the superfluous &#8216;skit&#8217; <em>May I Help You?<\/em> before the acoustic closer <em>Sunset<\/em>, which bookends things nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Use The Daylight<\/em> doesn&#8217;t have quite the same flow as the first album, but that&#8217;s down to both shifts in style and the fact it&#8217;s been handled by two producers. It&#8217;s still very worth your time though. <strong>7.5\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Use The Daylight<\/em> is available on vinyl and digital from Dealing With
