Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although they\u2019d already gone some way towards polishing up their edges, it must also be said that they\u2019re a far slicker outfit than that which rocked the old O2 Academy back in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a fact displayed starkly during old favourites <em>Barroom Hero<\/em> and <em>Boys On The Docks<\/em>, both of which sound a world away from their rough \u2018n\u2019 ready street-punk origins a quarter-century back, which many fans still hold dear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thankfully, neither Dropkick Murphys\u2019 social conscience nor political convictions have suffered any dilution. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And their rendition of <em>We Shall Overcome<\/em> \u2013 an old labour song synonymous with the US civil rights movement of the \u201850s and \u201860s \u2013 is a passionate riposte to the politics of division, wrought by the twin scourges of Republicanism in their country and Conservatism in ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That the latter is aired on an evening when Martin Luther King Jr. would have celebrated his 94th birthday feels especially apt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These steadfast views likewise define the band&#8217;s newest studio project. The overly saccharine <em>Queen of Suffolk County<\/em> is among the weakest moments in their entire catalogue, while the most popular, <em>I\u2019m Shipping Up to Boston<\/em> (an earlier use of Guthrie\u2019s lyrics), while rapturously received, feels somewhat perfunctory, its energy driven by a bellowing audience rather than the band on-stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As they reel out guest vocalist Jaime Wyatt for closing gambit <em>The Dirty Glass<\/em>, however, the overriding verdict is of a mightily fun return, and one which \u2013 for better or for worse \u2013 stands apart from any Dropkick Murphys show the bulk of us have previously experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At \u00a342, though, tickets certainly didn\u2019t come cheap \u2013 something the band were perhaps conscious of when enlisting a whopping three support acts. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nevertheless, the singer-songwriter rises to the challenge of warming a quiet room, winning folks over with a cover of The Clash\u2019s <em>Bankrobber <\/em>before keeping them invested during his own singalongs; eventually earning a warm ovation on the strength of big-hearted anthems such a<em>s To The Daughters Of The World<\/em> and <em>Highway Of Life<\/em>.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next up are Sydney, Australia\u2019s <strong>The Rumjacks<\/strong> \u2013 one of a host of new generation Celtic punk acts who\u2019ve emerged in the wake of tonight\u2019s headliners. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an influential career spanning over three decades, the Hermosa Beach, CA legends certainly do threaten to steal the show, evoking their &#8217;90s prime whilst belying the reality of four men in their mid-50s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless of age, the scathing chords of 1997 commentary <em>Society <\/em>hit as hard as ever (\u201cWhich means two things: We\u2019re old as fuck, and nothing fucking changes\u201d \u2013 guitarist Fletcher Dragge), while in the absence of any full-blooded ragers from Dropkick Murphys, the song <em>Pennywise <\/em>(\u201cby the band Pennywise, from the album <em>Pennywise<\/em>\u201d) proves the speediest slice of pure punk all evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time they\u2019ve signed off to the rapturous chants of <em>Bro Hymn<\/em>, their 45-minute slot feels insufficient, with many visibly and audibly thirsting for more.
