The Futureheads – Powers (Nul Records)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sunderland indie-rock\nheroes The Futureheads are back with their first electric guitar release in\nalmost a decade \u2013 and it\u2019s like they\u2019ve never been away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The quartet, who emerge\nat the start of the \u201800s as part of a swarm of guitar bands, stood out from the\noff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They didn\u2019t try to\ndisguise their Mackem twang, wore influences like Gang Of Four and Adam Ant (listen\nto Car Trouble \u2026) on their sleeve, and were a refreshingly honest blast of\nspiky North East talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They earned an NME\nSingle of the Year award for their cover of Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love, released\nfive critically-acclaimed albums and headlined countless tours before going on indefinite\nhiatus in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Futureheads are back with their first album since 2012.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Now, to everyone\nsurprise and delight, guitarists Barry Hyde and Ross Millard, bassist David\n‘Jaff’ Craig and drummer Dave Hyde are back with a new album \u2013 and it\u2019s a\nbelter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their last album, 2012\u2019s\nRant, was an a capella effort which expanded on the four-part harmonies which set\nthem apart from their peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was an enjoyable enough\nrecord, if light years away from the guitar-powered post-punk which made us fall\nfor them in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I\u2018m pleased to say\ntheir return is a full-on return to their earliest days, when their sound was instantly\nrecognisable, and there\u2019s no mere retreading of past glories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It kicks off with aptly schizophrenic\nlead track Jekyll, which won the support of 6Music\u2019s Steve Lamacq, Marc Riley and\nShaun Keaveny, who made it his single of the week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Futureheads will promote Powers with a UK tour in December.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s quickly followed\nby one of the album\u2019s standout tracks, Good Night Out, which references the\nlocal habit of \u201ctalking to the river at the end of a good night out\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere, Animus\naddresses Barry\u2019s depression, which, we now know, derailed the band in the\nfirst place, questioning \u201cis your life a struggle, did something burst your\nbubble?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across The Border examines\nthe Heads\u2019 hometown becoming the face of Brexit, asking \u201cwhat will it take to\nchange your mind?\u201d, while the excellent Listen, Little Man ponders \u201cwhen did we\nall think so small?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nfrantic punk rush of Headcase is another song about Barry\u2019s mental health\nstruggles, and probably my favourite on the album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\nsings: \u201cThere\u2019s madness in your eyes\/And you don\u2019t even know\/I think you\u2019ve\nlost the plot\/I think it\u2019s time to go\/And get some help, \u201cWhat do you mean?\/I\u2019m\nfeeling great\/Just look at the smile on my face\u201d. Brave \u2013 and I\u2019d imagine very\ncathartic – stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s\njoy here too, in the shape of 0704, a love song to his partner and young daughter which\nis the most sentimental song they’ve ever written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ross, who\u2019s also a member of Frankie\u00a0& The Heartstrings, says it\u2019s a record which \u201cis a little off kilter and maybe a little more out of step than you might expect from four lads in their 30s. I think it might surprise people.\u201d It does, and in a very good way indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Futureheads sound completely reinvigorated, and it\u2019s good \u2013 no, make that great \u2013 to have them back. Their  December tour promises to be a treat. 8\/10<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
