LIVE REVIEW: The Warriors + Small Seeds, Black Bull, Gateshead, Friday 23 August 2019 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\nlove seeing bands for the first time, and one of the best ways to do that is to\nkeep an eye on the listings for your nearest grassroots venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nme that means a visit to me to my local punk pub, the Black Bull, just over the\nroad from the Metro Interchange in Gateshead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\nhas live music most weekends, and occasionally during the week too, and it\nhosts plenty of up and coming bands as well as circuit regulars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Friday night gig offered a bit of both, with oi! stalwarts The Warriors<\/strong> travelling all the way from Herne bay in Kent, while support band Small Seeds<\/strong> were venturing over the border for the first time from Cumnock in Ayrshire, Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small Seeds<\/strong> were a name I hadn\u2019t come across before, but the four-piece kick up an almighty full-throttle racket, and a most enjoyable one at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their singer Rey, long-haired, clad in a kilt, and with a blue splodge on his forehead, looked straight out of Braveheart, but his mission here was a peaceful one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their\n10-song set of full-throttle punk was a good appetiser for what was to come,\neven if some of the between-song banter was lost in translation – I thought\nGeordies have hard-to-understand accents!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\nwondered what the letters F.T.S., taped onto the singer\u2019s guitar, meant, and\nall was revealed as we were invited to sing along with their set-closer Fuck\nThe System (I should have guessed really).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small\nSeeds have just one single to their name, the double A-side Rejected\/Lock Yer\nDoors, and both songs were played here. They\u2019re busy recording a new EP, and on\nthis evidence, it\u2019ll be worth looking out for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time then for the main event, and, astonishingly, a gig which was the furthest north that The Warriors<\/strong> have ever played, despite being formed in 1981!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After\na few technical problems, and the loan of an amp from Small Seeds, they\u2019re\nready to go, and they blaze through a 75-minute set of tough old-school streetpunk,\nvery much in the mould of bands like The 4 Skins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frontman\nSaxby was the original singer with another Herne Bay oi! outfit, The Last\nResort, and joined The Warriors in 1995. He\u2019s the longest-serving member of the\ncurrent line-up, as, like most bands of their vintage, they\u2019ve been through a\nfew changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their latest album, These Streets Are Ours, came out this year on STEP-1 Music<\/strong><\/a>, and it\u2019s the eighth official full-length release of their stop-start existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\ngave us five of the 19 songs which made up tonight\u2019s set, with the pick of them\nbeing the excellent Rebellion Lost and the closing This Is My Anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shit\nTown, from 2015\u2019s Operation Oi! is another of the highlights, along with The\nLast Resort song Violence In Our Minds, late in the set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If hard-edged music which promotes pride not prejudice is your thing, you\u2019ll feel right at home in the company of The Warriors. I know I did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
