{"id":8099,"date":"2022-09-23T22:12:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-23T21:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=8099"},"modified":"2022-09-28T22:12:47","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T21:12:47","slug":"suzi-moon-proves-shes-a-star-in-the-making-with-storming-debut-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=8099","title":{"rendered":"Suzi Moon proves she&#8217;s a star in the making with storming debut album"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">ALBUM REVIEW: Suzi Moon &#8211; Dumb &amp; In Luv <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">(Pirates Press Records)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Suzi Moon<\/strong> might appear to have arrived out of nowhere fully formed as a new female role model for those who like their rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll served loud and nasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But those in the know will tell you her story began 20 years ago, when she started out as guitarist with all-girl Californian punk rock band <strong>Civet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known then as Suzi Homewrecker, she played on five albums before the band went their separate ways in 2011 (they&#8217;ve never officially split up).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After playing with Turbulent Hearts, who released three EPs, and L.A. Machina, who managed just one single, she&#8217;s back with a new band as Suzi Moon.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suzi-moon.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"suzi moon\" class=\"wp-image-7889\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suzi-moon.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suzi-moon.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suzi-moon.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suzi-moon.jpg?resize=1536%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suzi-moon.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/suzi-moon.jpg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Suzi Moon and her band.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debut album <em>Dumb &amp; In Luv<\/em> draws on important themes in Moon&#8217;s life, such as love, heartbreak and family, and also on the influence of her California upbringing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She cites Social Distortion, Rancid, Green Day, and Sugarcult as influences, but her band is already shaping its own distinctive sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moon handles bass and vocals, Drew Champion (The Split Seconds\/Glitter Trash) is on lead guitar, Davey Warsop (Sharp Shock\/Bad Cop Bad Cop) on guitar and Sean Peterson on drums (though Justin McGrath plays on two tracks).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Airplay friendly<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three tracks from the album were trailed as singles &#8211; the title cut, <em>Family Memories<\/em> and <em>California<\/em>, which just happen to be its opening three songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Ramones drumbeat and insistent bassline kick off <em>Dumb &amp; In Luv<\/em>, and Suzi really shows her punk rock chops on the song, about how falling in love can make you do stupid things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Family Memories<\/em> is a heartfelt tribute to Moon&#8217;s grandmother, who died in 2019, while <em>California <\/em>is a love letter to the Golden State. More mid-paced than the first two tracks, it&#8217;s probably my favourite song on the album, and certainly the most airplay friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Suzi Moon - &quot;California&quot; (Official Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pzzuEQUsMPI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Money <\/em>is a salutary tale about wasting your life chasing $$$, when true happiness lies elsewhere; Moon sings: &#8220;I had a job and it made me wanna die, they let me go with no warning, no goodbye.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rest of the album is pretty much Moon pouring her heart out about love. Side one ends with <em>I Go Blind<\/em>, about the things people do to stay in a relationship, while side two starts with <em>Honey<\/em>, which admits &#8220;you played me like a videogame&#8221; before concluding that sometimes it&#8217;s okay to have fun while it lasts, then let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Any Other Way<\/em> is about finding &#8216;the one&#8217; when you&#8217;re not necessarily looking for them, while <em>99 Miles To Pasadena<\/em> is an upbeat number about looking forward to getting back to the one you love after being apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Suzi Moon - &quot;Dumb &amp; In Luv&quot; (Official Music Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E90lSdW15bs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Believe In Luv<\/em> is a self-analytical look at how being with the right person can change you for the right reasons, as Moon reflects &#8220;he gets under my skin, I&#8217;m a better person when I&#8217;m with him&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Freedom<\/em>, which closes out the album, is a more sedate affair altogether, about listening to your heart and fighting for what you want. With acoustic guitars instead of electric, it shows a softer side to the band than their foot-to-the-floor punk &#8216;n&#8217; roll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is Suzi Moon&#8217;s third release after the excellent EPs <em>Call The Shots<\/em> (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=6283\">reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>) and <em>Animal <\/em>(<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=7603\">reviewed here<\/a><\/strong>), but was mostly written before those records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it&#8217;s punk, garage rock or rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll, it&#8217;s bloody great, and marks Suzi down as a real talent to watch &#8211; the Joan Jett of her generation, if you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Rocking out<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, you can hear The Runaways in her sound, and The Donnas and a little of The Distillers too, but Suzi Moon is her own gal, and can rock out with the best of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She proved that with a cracking set at Rebellion Festival in Blackpool last month (and an even better pre-show in a tiny venue the previous night, if accounts are correct).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The band are honing their craft on US support dates with Teenage Bottlerocket and Dead Boys. Let&#8217;s hope they come back to the UK before they&#8217;re finished touring this record.
