{"id":7322,"date":"2022-02-17T17:42:15","date_gmt":"2022-02-17T17:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=7322"},"modified":"2022-02-17T17:42:16","modified_gmt":"2022-02-17T17:42:16","slug":"frank-turner-lets-loose-and-produces-his-best-album-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=7322","title":{"rendered":"Frank Turner lets loose and produces his best album yet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">ALBUM REVIEW: Frank Turner &#8211; FTHC (Xtra Mile Recordings)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Folk-punk singer Frank Turner started his career as vocalist of post-hardcore band Million Dead, so it should come as no surprise when he decides to let rip a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I&#8217;ve got to say I was a little taken aback &#8211; in a very pleasant way &#8211; but just how FUCKING ANGRY he sounds in places of this ninth solo studio album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His last couple of offerings have tended towards the folkier, most acoustic side of his canon of work, but much of <em>FTHC <\/em>is absolutely raging, resulting in his best record in years &#8211; maybe even the best of his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rowdy opener <em>Non Serviam<\/em> (Latin for &#8216;I will not serve&#8217;) sets the tone, with him and his band The Sleeping Souls sounding heavier than ever, and there&#8217;s no let-up for lead single <em>The Gathering<\/em>, which is about longing for the return of live music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Non Serviam\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IqJqAKc3l44?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Haven&#8217;t Been Doing So Well<\/em> is probably the most typically Frank Turner song on the album, about dealing with depression, and after the last couple of years a lot of people will identify as he sings &#8220;if self-loathing was a sport I&#8217;d be Muhammad Ali\/Because I can sting like a butterfly and sink like a bee&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockdown was obviously a cathartic time for Turner, and he addresses some key issues from his past, not least on <em>Untainted Love<\/em>, when he admits &#8220;I sure do miss cocaine, the bravado and the bloodstains, crushing highs and creeping shame&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His relationship with his father is the subject of a trio of songs which make up the backbone of the album, <em>Fatherless<\/em> is about being sent off to boarding school at the age of eight, and lacking a father figure to teach him how to be a man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>My Bad<\/em> is another angry rant, this time about hating his upbringing and the expectations it brought with it, concluding: &#8220;I did not want to be my father&#8217;s son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Forgiving mood<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third part of the triumvirate, <em>Miranda<\/em>, is a more relaxed tune telling the story of how his once-estranged father transitioned and now lives as a transgender woman, but all is forgiven, as he sings &#8220;it was never about who she was, just the way that he behaved&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s one of the best songs on the record, and that&#8217;s also the case with <em>A Wave Across A Bay<\/em>, a heartfelt tribute to his much-missed friend Scott Hutchison of Scottish indie-folk band <em>Frightened Rabbit<\/em>. I&#8217;d put it on a par with one of my favourite FT songs, <em>Long Live The Queen<\/em>. Yes, it&#8217;s that good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soul-baring satisfied, it&#8217;s time to get angry again, and <em>The Resurrectionists<\/em> is about the pains of growing up and losing touch with old friends, while <em>Punches <\/em>turns up the fury even further, fighting back against life&#8217;s frustrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Perfect Score<\/em> sees Frank in self-apologetic mode, insisting &#8220;I&#8217;m genuinely sorry for all the stupid things that I&#8217;ve done&#8221;, before concluding &#8220;no one has a perfect score&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/frank-turner-3.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"frank turner\" class=\"wp-image-432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/frank-turner-3.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/frank-turner-3.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/frank-turner-3.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/frank-turner-3.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/frank-turner-3.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closing trio of songs sees our man contemplating reaching 40 and settling down. <em>The Work<\/em> sees him getting used to being a married man, doing domestic chores at home, instead of being on the road, with all its excesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Little Life<\/em> is about leaving London with wife Jess for a quieter life, while <em>Farewell To The City<\/em> is a memory-laden love letter to &#8220;the place that I used to call home&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turner says he wanted FTHC to &#8220;blow the cobwebs away&#8221;. It certainly does that, and is right up there with <em>Love Ire &amp; Song<\/em> and <em>England Keep My Bones<\/em> as his best work.
