{"id":6969,"date":"2021-10-15T19:52:44","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T18:52:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=6969"},"modified":"2021-10-15T19:52:46","modified_gmt":"2021-10-15T18:52:46","slug":"frank-carter-and-the-rattlesnakes-show-crossover-appeal-with-sticky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=6969","title":{"rendered":"Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes show crossover appeal with Sticky"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">ALBUM REVIEW: Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes &#8211; Sticky (International Death Cult)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frank Carter is the heavily-tattooed singer known for the fierce intensity of his live shows with first Gallows and, more recently, the Rattlesnakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the crest of a wave after third album, 2019&#8217;s <em>End Of Suffering<\/em>, took them to a career-best No 4 in the UK charts, they played the gig of their lives, headlining London&#8217;s Alexandra Palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, like every other working musician, they had the rug well and truly pulled from under them as the industry was closed down by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forced to direct their pent-up energy elsewhere, Carter and guitarist Dean Richardson wrote <em>Sticky<\/em>, possibly the best album of their career so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clocking in at just 28 minutes 27 seconds, it&#8217;s their shortest by some distance, but it&#8217;s all-killer, no-filler. Pic: Jenny Brough.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carter insists it&#8217;s not a lockdown album, but &#8220;a freedom record&#8221;, and it certainly seems to mark something of a new phase for the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They&#8217;ve melded hardcore punk with the pop sensibilities Carter displayed in post-Gallows band Pure Love, with the whole album based around infectious beats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lead single <em>My Town<\/em>, featuring Joe Talbot of IDLES, brings together two of modern punk&#8217;s best-known figures, and was a jaw-dropping appetiser for the album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s about our collective mental health falling apart &#8211; something a lot of people will be able to identify with after the shitshow that was 2020-21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Frank Carter &amp; The Rattlesnakes - My Town ft. Joe Talbot\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gx59hOw2HcA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carter is no stranger to collaboration, of course, having made records with grime artist Lethal Bizzle as long ago as 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, he&#8217;s joined by another big name in Bobby Gillespie on the closing <em>Original Sin<\/em>, with the Primal Scream man adding a deliciously sleazy feel to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electro-pop artist Cassyette features on <em>Off With His Head<\/em>, adding a veneer of glam, while the banging single <em>Go Get A Tattoo<\/em> features a kindred spirit in queer underground electro-punk sensation Lynks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"699\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/frank-carter-938x1024.jpg?resize=640%2C699&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7015\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/frank-carter.jpg?resize=938%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 938w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/frank-carter.jpg?resize=275%2C300&amp;ssl=1 275w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/frank-carter.jpg?resize=768%2C839&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/frank-carter.jpg?resize=1406%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1406w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/frank-carter.jpg?resize=1875%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1875w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/frank-carter.jpg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Frank Carter and Dean Richardson of the Rattlesnakes.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carter unleashes his frustrations at being unable to fulfil a lifelong ambition of opening his own inking studio because of the pandemic, and it&#8217;s another of the album&#8217;s standout tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guests have one thing in common. &#8220;They&#8217;re all underdogs,&#8221; says Carter, or, as Richardson &#8211; who produces the band for the first time puts it, &#8220;outsiders&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previous albums have found Carter screaming himself hoarse at times. Here he still rails against injustice, the patriarchy, right-wing politics and toxic masculinity, but his rage is, for the most part, contained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Songs like <em>Bang Bang<\/em>, <em>Take It To The Brink<\/em> and <em>Cobra Queen<\/em> show us a band with a broader appeal, without alienating fans of their older out-and-out hardcore material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes take <em>Sticky <\/em>on the road in November.
