REVIEW: REBELLION FESTIVAL 2019, WINTER GARDENS, BLACKPOOL, DAY TWO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the second day of the 23rd<\/sup> Rebellion\nFestival and the big question is \u2013 can I keep up the pace from the opening day,\nwhen I saw all or some of a ridiculous 26 bands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer, obviously, is \u2018no\u2019, but I still managed a\nvery respectable 19, starting in the Empress with a band who were new to me, DREAM NAILS<\/strong>, an all-female DIY punk\/riot grrrl four-piece from London who call\nthemselves \u2018punk witches\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are another band who made the huge\nleap from the Introducing stage last year, and their catchy songs seemed to go\ndown well with the decent-sized crowd who\u2019d managed to get out of bed after the\nexcesses of day one, especially their best known song Deep Heat, which is about\nhaving said muscle massage brand on a rather painful part of a genteleman\u2019s\nanatomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next up were a band I\u2019d seen before, THE FUCKIN GLORIOUS<\/strong>, who describe\nthemselves as ADHD punk from Yorkshire. They\u2019re fast and loud, and for some\nreason decided to play their set dressed only in their underpants. Once you\u2019d\ngot over seeing so much flabby male flesh they were pretty bloody good, despite\nthe crap sound in the Arena, which was really starting to grate on people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They smashed through most of last year\u2019s\nexcellent debut album Trite, with singer Beaker (who is either a brilliant\nfrontman or utterly deranged, I can\u2019t tell) going from clambering all over the\nspeakers to writhing on his back in the middle of the crowd, without missing a\nline. Great stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A first visit to the Introducing stage\nwas in order next, to catch THE\nDOPAMINES<\/strong>, a four-piece from Cincinnati, Ohio, who were making their first\nappearance, despite being a going concern since 2006. I was surprised to learn\nthey have four albums under their belt, and will need to check them out, as\nthey sounded like a heavier version of one of my favourite US bands, The Menzingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back on more familiar ground, Watford three-piece\nKNOCK OFF<\/strong> pulled a sizeable crowd in\nthe Casbah, which is testament to their growing reputation on the UK punk\nscene. They\u2019re difficult to pigeonhole – their early material sounds like The\nPartisans, though they\u2019re not afraid to throw in the odd Oi! – so I won\u2019t\nbother. I just know they made a great noise with catchy-as-hell choruses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their set included tracks from their new album You Get One Life as well as the pick of their back catalogue \u2013 14 examples of which are generously included as a free CD in the new one. Football Beer and Punk Rock and This Is Who We Are This Is What We Do were the highlights of the set for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n\n\n\n

A friend had recommended I check out KARL PHILLIPS & THE REJECTS<\/strong> on the\nIntroducing stage, and I wasn\u2019t disappointed. A mash-up of ska, punk and grime,\nthe Midlands six-piece reminded me of [spunge] \u2013 remember them? \u2013 with more of\na hip-hop flavour. Another band to explore back at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next band need no introduction. I\nheard GIMP FIST<\/strong>, from Bishop\nAuckland, County Durham, for the first time at Rebellion a few years ago, and their\nhook-filled streetpunk has made them one of my favourite bands. I\u2019m still\namazed they are further up the bill than a 3.30pm slot, but the fact they pull\npunters into the venue by filling the Empress Ballroom might have something to\ndo with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their set marked the launch of Blood,\ntheir seventh full-length album, and a handful of tracks made the cut. The likes\nof Pressure and Easy Target didn\u2019t sound at all out of place alongside fan\nfavourites like First In Line, War On The Streets, their excellent cover of\nPerkele\u2019s Heart Full Of Pride, and traditional set closer Here I Stand. Great\nset, they smashed it as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not wanting the adrenalin levels to\ndrop, the next stop was the Casbah stage, where Australian streetpunk\/rock \u2018n\u2019\nroll band RUST <\/strong>are tearing it a new\none. They\u2019ve played Rebellion half a dozen times now, so pulled a good-sized\ncrowd for their set, which mixes early AC\/DC riffs with early 80s UK Oi!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A short food break later and we\u2019re back\nin the Casbah for the welcome return of Watford streetpunks ARGY BARGY<\/strong>, who were a noticeable omission\nfrom last year\u2019s line-up. They\u2019ve been doing this for over 25 years now, and I\u2019ve\nnever seen them play a bad show, so it was great to hear anthems like No\nRegrets again. A top-notch set, in front of a big crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time for a sit down I think, which meant\na first visit of the weekend to the Opera House, and another band who were new\nto me (even though they were formed in 1977), THE AVENGERS<\/strong>. Singer Penelope Houston and guitarist Greg Ingraham remain from the original line-up, and they\npulled a good crowd considering a lot of people, myself included, knew them by\nreputation only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The San Francisco band famously played\nwith the Sex Pistols at their final show at Winterland in 1978, and later worked\nwith Steve Jones, hence the inclusion of Second To None, also recorded by The\nProfessionals as 1-2-3, in their enjoyable 50-minute set. Another band to research\nfurther.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over in the Casbah, London-based Oi! outfit\nBOOZE & GLORY<\/strong> pulled a massive\ncrowd and are clearly becoming one of those bands who could be future\nheadliners of this festival. Is it me, or are they moving away from their\noriginal sound a little?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the unfortunate clashes which\nRebellion throws up saw RUTS DC<\/strong> take\nto the Empress stage at almost the same time, so I stayed for a bit of both. The\nWest Londoners celebrated the 40th<\/sup> anniversary of their one proper\nalbum The Crack this year, and put on another side combining old classics like\nBabylon\u2019s Burning and Staring At the Rude Boys with new ones like Music Must\nDestroy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blackpool\u2019s very own post-punk band THE MEMBRANES<\/strong> aren\u2019t to everyone\u2019s\ntaste, but their latest album What Nature Gives\/Nature Takes Away is one of the\nbest things I\u2019ve heard this year, and the songs sounded great in the Opera\nHouse, where John Robb and co were accompanied by a five-piece choir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of those periods where there was\nnothing I really wanted to see led me back to the Introducing stage, where proud\nanti-fascist skinhead band THE BOIS<\/strong>\nwere kicking up quite an impressive racket, and even had a crowd-surfer. They were\nthe first band from Singapore ever to play Rebellion, and don\u2019t be surprised to\nsee them again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, festival favourites UK SUBS <\/strong>were playing to a massive crowd\nin the Empress, with singer Charlie Harper in fine form, even at the age of 75.\nTheir debut album Another Kind Of Blues, which celebrated its 40th<\/sup>\nanniversary this year, made up much of their set, but the biggest singalong \u2013\nand one of the best of the weekend \u2013 was reserved for the sadly-still-relevant\nWarhead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GUITAR GANGSTERS<\/strong>, a London\nband who have been going for 30 years, are one of those groups who have never\nreally had the credit they deserve, despite a run of excellent albums\ncontaining some of the best melodic punk you could wish to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based around brothers Pete and Philip\nLey, they recently added a second guitarist, Ed Roulette, and it\u2019s given them some\nvery welcome extra oomph (not that they needed it)! They sounded absolutely\nsuperb in the Pavilion, and were up there with the best bands I saw all weekend\nas they mixed back catalogue gems like Radio Shakedown and Going To London and\nwith songs like Guns & Knives and Obsession from their latest album, 2017\u2019s\nSex & Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most-anticipated bands of the\nweekend were next, as THE STRANGLERS<\/strong>\nheadlined the Empress. Despite their long history, this was their first-ever\nappearance at the festival, and the ballroom was rammed as they rolled out the\nclassics like Grip, Peaches, Nice \u2018N\u2019 Sleazy, Something Better Change and Five\nMinutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll commit punk rock heresy and admit\nthat I\u2019ve never been a huge fan of the Men In Black, and I left before the end\nfor a quick taste of THE MEMBERS<\/strong>,\nwho were closing proceedings in the Opera House. I got there just in time to\nsee them murder their best-known song, Sound Of The Suburbs, slowing it down to\nalmost unrecognisable pace. To say they left the stage to muted applause is an\nunderstatement. Serves me right for not sticking with The Stranglers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, 17 bands for the day. Not a patch on\nthe first day, but still a decent tally, and a few new ones to explore, as well\nas some old favourites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
