Wargasm &#8211; The Slash Years 1992-1997 (HNE Recordings\/Cherry Red)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Music fans of a certain age will remember <strong>L7<\/strong> as a grunge-punk band who created a bit of a stir in the late 80s\/early 90s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formed by singing guitarists Suzi Gardner and Donita Sparks in LA in 1985, bassist Jennifer Finch and drummer Anne Anderson completed the line-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their self-titled debut album <em>L7<\/em>, released on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epitaph.com\/\">Epitaph Records<\/a><\/strong> in 1988, was a straightforward punk rock record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two years later, with Dee Plakas now on drums, they followed it with Smell The Magic on influential Seattle label <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.subpop.com\/\">Sub Pop<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Grunge appeal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Touring the UK as openers for Nirvana just as grunge took off, their place in the movement was assured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, they weren&#8217;t punk, grunge, riot grrrl, or hard rock, but appealed to fans of all those genres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A move to Slash Records (distributed by Reprise\/Warner) followed, and it&#8217;s the three albums they made there which form this set.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"636\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/L7-bricks-are-heavy-cover.jpg?resize=640%2C636\" alt=\"L7 bricks are heavy\" class=\"wp-image-6060\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/L7-bricks-are-heavy-cover.jpg?resize=1024%2C1018&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/L7-bricks-are-heavy-cover.jpg?resize=300%2C298&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/L7-bricks-are-heavy-cover.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/L7-bricks-are-heavy-cover.jpg?resize=768%2C763&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/L7-bricks-are-heavy-cover.jpg?resize=1536%2C1527&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/L7-bricks-are-heavy-cover.jpg?resize=2048%2C2036&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/L7-bricks-are-heavy-cover.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/L7-bricks-are-heavy-cover.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Bricks Are Heavy was L7&#8217;s third album, but their first for Slash Records.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third album Bricks Are Heavy (1992), saw them work with big-name producer Butch Vig, who made their sound heavier and dirtier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hook-filled breakthrough single Pretend We&#8217;re Dead, a hit in the US and UK, is an obvious standout, but there&#8217;s plenty more to enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yoko Ono-sampling opener <em>Wargasm<\/em>, <em>Shitlist <\/em>and <em>Diet Pill <\/em>are all grungy delights, as are the singles <em>Everglade <\/em>and <em>Monster<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"L7 - Pretend We&#039;re Dead ( The Word 1992 )\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tMykR5v8-XA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four bonus tracks include <em>Used To Love Him<\/em>, L7&#8217;s feminised version of Guns &#8216;N&#8217; Roses&#8217; <em>Used To Love Her.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L7 didn&#8217;t rely on their looks, and were earning a reputation as a band you didn&#8217;t mess with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After barracking due to technical problems at Reading in 1992, Sparks threw her tampon into the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And an appearance on Channel 4&#8217;s <em>The Word<\/em>, when Sparks finished a song naked from the waist down, did their &#8216;bad girls&#8217; Finch left during the recording of L7&#8217;s fifth album, 1997&#8217;s <em>The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sparks and Greta Brinkman played bass on the record, which though still full of attitude, was slower and darker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite generally good reviews, the label released only one single, <em>Off The Wagon<\/em>, suggesting they didn&#8217;t believe in the album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it wasn&#8217;t what they expected: though Drama and Bad Things are right up there with their best work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps unsurprisingly, L7 were dropped when it sold poorly. After one more album on their own indie label, they went on indefinite hiatus. Eventually reuniting in 2014, they released a new album five years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although some might prefer their punky beginnings (first single <em>Shove <\/em>remaining a fan favourite), these were undoubtedly their peak years. <strong>8\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t confuse this 3CD collection with the 2000
