ALBUM REVIEW: TNSrecords Volume 4: Cheap Cans Broken Vans + Basement Bar Bands (TNSrecords)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Manchester-based DIY punk label TNSrecords<\/a><\/strong> has been releasing prime slices of underground noise since 2008, and decided to mark its landmark 100th release with a very special compilation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s quite apt, as the very first TNS release was a compilation, and they’ve been two more since then, which is why this 33-track offering is volume four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wanted a release representing its whole time as a label and something that involved lots of members of the DIY community, hence this compilation featuring bands both on TNS and from the wider DIY punk community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compilations have always been a great way of finding new bands, and that’s certainly the case here. There’s plenty of variety too, with everything from raging hardcore to folk-punk, and just about everything inbetween.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to start reviewing such a wide-ranging release? At the start I guess. Leeds hardcore crew Incisions <\/strong>get the juices flowing from the off with New Day, from their split 2020 single with thrashy trio Pizzatramp<\/strong>, who are here too, with the searing I Got Work In The Morning, from their 2019 album Grand Relapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hardcore and post-HC are well-represented, with impressive tracks from Jodie Faster<\/strong>, Brassick<\/strong>, In Evil Hour<\/strong>, The Domestics<\/strong> and Grand Collapse<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uniforms<\/strong> and Tim Loud<\/strong> fly the flag for melodic punk, while Faintest Idea<\/strong>, Redeemon <\/strong>and Harijan <\/strong>bring the ska-punk to the table, Matilda’s Scoundrels<\/strong> and Roughneck Riot<\/strong> are folk-punk, Speed Dinosaurs<\/strong> have cornered the market in skiffle-punk, and Follow Your Dreams<\/strong> and PI$$ER<\/strong> blur genres sufficiently to defy easy pigeon-holing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is no lazy retrospective label sampler either: most of the tracks are from the last couple of years, with eight either unreleased or only previously available digitally. This includes I Got You by garage rock trio Nosebleed<\/strong>, the blistering Freedom From by The Restarts<\/strong> and You Can Only Try Your Best, by TNS founder (and ex-Revenge Of The Psychotronic Man shouter) Andy Davies’ latest band Knife Club<\/strong> (whose debut album is reviewed here<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone will have their own favourite tracks; I love State O’Yer by Manchester scamps Aerial Salad<\/strong>, who bring the spirit of ’77 to the ’20s (their last album Dirt Mall is reviewed here<\/a><\/em>), and the wonderfully bonkers I’m A Cat by Cornish h\/c crew Bobby Funk<\/strong> (whose debut album you can read about here<\/em><\/a>). But there’s nothing I’d skip here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
