We are living in rather strange times at the moment. How has Covid-19 impacted on you?

CC. It’s driving me crazy to be honest, as I like travelling around a lot. It’s good from the point of view of getting on with a lot of studio work that I’ve got to do and being able to buckle down and do that. I’ve been able to write and record a lot of music and work on my book. I’ve also been able to back-catalogue unreleased stuff from other old bands I’ve been involved with so that I can get that released. I have an A3 pad and write the list of things I need to do – hopefully I will get through the list before I die and if not then I guess it will make no difference.

Q. You’ve just released Like Wow, your debut EP with Rude GRL & CC. Are you pleased with the reaction it’s received so far?

CC. Yeah, very pleased, as we’ve been getting so much good feedback. I am not very good at faking self-deprecation, so I’ll be honest and say I do expect the material I put out to get good feedback. We’ve only really started to dip our feet into where we’re going with this project. It’s a lot of fun and I think it’s opened up loads of ideas for us as to where we can go with this punk meets hip-hop, cross-genre/gender/whatever…anything goes vibe!

Q. Rude GRL is of course, Jenna Dickens, who has performed with artists such as Basement Jaxx in the past. How did you first meet Jenna?

CC. I was in a band called The Wolfmen with Marco Pirroni, we’d worked together with Adam Ant and were signed to Sony publishing who put us up to write with a load of writers including FKA Twigs & Jenna. We wrote a load of tracks with Jenna, then she disappeared for three or four years. I was getting some new tracks together and I texted her out of the blue and asked if she wanted to work on some material, we met up and it just clicked.

Q. Although you’ve covered a lot of ground musically throughout your career, your EP sees you heading in a different direction, with a heavy hip-hop influence. Was this an area you’ve wanted to spread your wings into for a while?

CC. I thought it would be fun to do my thing with some cool hip-hop artists. I think Rude GRL has this amazing freestyle and her lyrics are great. She is a mix up, the same as me. I love her energy and creativity.

Q. You’ve written in the punk and rock format for many years. Did you approach the song-writing differently for the EP compared to the way you’ve written in the past?

CC. Not really. We were sent some beats by Nicholas De Carlo to work with and we picked out the ones we liked. I’d add some bass and guitar and Jenna would do her thing. We didn’t have a plan when we started working together, this is just the way the songs turned out. Ideally, we’d like to invite Rat Scabies of The Damned in on the drums at some point, especially if we get to do some live stuff.

Chris Constantinou and Jenna Dickens are Rude GRL & CC.

Q. Lyrically, what are you conveying in these songs?

CC. RudeGRL writes all the lyrics. If you listen to them, I think you will get an idea where she is coming from. At first, she asked me if it was too much and I said no, let it all out and go for it like it was the last song you were ever going to write. It’s full throttle and in your face.

Q. How many songs did you write during the writing sessions?

CC. For the album, Nicholas De Carlo sent us 15 beats and we picked 12 that we liked. We gave ourselves an hour for each song and worked in three-hour sessions, so three an hour. Like Wow was written and recorded in 10 minutes, as Jenna had missed her train and we had 30 minutes to kill before her next train. I don’t like spending a long time on writing and recording, and like to do a maximum of three takes of anything. Jenna normally lays all her vocals in one take. I whack down my bass and guitar parts down in a maximum of three takes. It’s really basic. I can’t stand working with producers who are just fresh out of music college or that are really anal and take 300 on one word or one note, no, that’s not for me!

Q. Is this a taster for a forthcoming full album or will you be approaching this as a regular release of EPs over the coming months?

CC. Like Wow EP is out now on Firefly Ent and we have Brand New Cadillac coming out on Cleopatra Records on the 25th January, The B- side is a track called Overkill which features Jack & Yuji from The Syamisenist (JP) and is mixed by Brandon Eggleston, who works with a load of great bands including my mates The Dandy Warhols. It sounds amazing! Brandon, Jack & Yuji also feature on a version of Like Wow. We will be releasing a few EPs and then an album. Nick from the Kaiser Chiefs has just done a remix. We also have a WOMXN empowerment EP coming out on Universal Music in April.

Q. Kevin at Firefly Ent has said they are putting Like Wow out as a special coloured vinyl edition.

Q. Going right back to the start. Who were those bands and artists that influenced you to start playing music?

CC. When I was about 13, I was sick of rucks and trouble and had started growing my hair from having been a skinhead. Watching from the back of the school hall while the school band jammed out a selection of Cream songs, I had a sort of rock ‘n’ roll epiphany with the heady smell of the Fender amps, the sleek and slinky look of the Fender Precision bass, those curly guitar leads, the throb of the Marshall amps, the hypnotic sound of the fuzzy wah wah guitar, combined with an array of gorgeous girls adoringly watching the band – all the pieces fell into place. As the session finished, and the group split with the girls and guitars in a jeep I imagined heading to the beach for a beer and good times. I knew there was more to life than gang fights, truancy and tear-ups. My love of sports turned into a passion for music, and I persuaded my dad to buy me a cheapo electric guitar and practiced Status Quo and Beatles tracks until my fingers bled. My fingertips may have been scattered with scabs, but suddenly life had started to feel better with The Beatles, Hendrix, The Who, T.Rex, Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker, Amon Düül and Tangerine Dream all inspiring me.

Q. You play the flute as well as bass and guitar. The flute is the sort of instrument you get to play at school. Did that come first or was it the guitar?

CC. When I said that I wanted to learn to play guitar the day after I saw the band in school, the teacher said that they had no guitars left so I’d have to make a choice between the bassoon, a tuba, one of those big Timpani drums or a flute. I thought of Jethro Tull – Ian Anderson standing on one leg and looking like a tramp – and decided to take the flute. I learned a load of Jethro Tull and Roland Kirk tracks, but I kept on thinking back to the school band, the Fender guitars, curly leads and those beautiful girls, and decided the flute wasn’t going to get me the good times I needed at that age. Some local guys who played came over to my mum’s house with guitars and drums and we set up in her kitchen and they suggested I play the bass, so I thought ‘why not’? We started playing Status Quo, The Beatles and all that sort of stuff and that’s how it started. I played every day until my fingers bled. I was hooked. We later graduated from my mum’s kitchen to the garage.

Q. At what point did you know you were going to be a professional musician?

CC. I knew it from the moment I saw the band playing in the school hall.

Q. Were your parents supportive of your ambitions or did they want you to be an accountant or something?

CC. They were just happy that it kept me out of trouble. They were fed up with the police constantly coming around. They’d already moved a couple of times because of the trouble I’d got into, so they were relieved that I’d found something to keep me out of trouble. They were supportive from that point of view and when neighbours used to complain about the racket we made they told them to go get lost, and that it was better we were making music than being on the streets getting into trouble.

Q. One of your early bands, The Drill, worked with Chas Chandler of The Animals as producer. How did you manage to end up working with him?

CC. One day I was going up Carnaby Street past Tracks Records and I just walked in. There were a couple of guys in suits there and I said that I was looking for a record deal. They looked at me and laughed and asked if I had a demo, which I did. They put it on and said that it sounded pretty good, so we got a deal from that. I guess it was being in the right place at the right time. They just happened to be part of Ebony Records and RCA, so we signed to them and they asked if we’d like to work with Chas Chandler. He was my hero, so that was incredible. We went to IBC Studios, which he owned at 35 Portland Place, and that was where Hendrix had recorded, so I was more blown away by that than anything else.

Chris Constantinou. As a young band, working with a member of The Animals and Hendrix and Slade’s manager must have been a great learning experience for you?

CC. Chas Chandler was a very interesting character. He was very upfront and very normal with no pretence. He was such a great down-to-earth bloke. He’d come in to the studio in the morning and send out for two sausage sandwiches, one with brown sauce and one with red, and while he was eating them, he would read a copy of The Sun. He’d put his feet up on the mixing desk and tell us to get on with it. He said that if anything interrupted him from his sausage sandwiches and reading The Sun, then it was wrong and he would get up and stop the recording!

Q. In the early `80s you joined Adam Ant’s band. How did you end up working with Adam Ant?

CC. The Drill had been releasing singles on RCA Records and supported Slade, who we met through Chas. They were great and looked after us like big brothers, showed us the ropes. When we were touring in the Midlands, they took us to their pub in Dudley and we became really good friends. We supported a load of punk and reggae bands that were doing well at the time, but we weren’t really getting anywhere. The Ramones were coming over for their first tour and RCA had got us the gig to open for them. We thought that this was it, our big break! Then the Ramones cancelled the tour – that was a massive blow for us. We were in the drummer Ray Weston’s basement where we used to practice and the guitarist at the time, Hal Lindes, told us he was leaving to join Dire Straits. Obviously, we were happy for him, but that on top of the Ramones support tour being cancelled left me feeling gutted. I was 21 years old or something like that, and thought it was the end of the road for me. Then I saw an advert in Melody Maker seeking a bass player and it said: “Must be able to stand and deliver.” I thought it must be Adam and the Ants. I phoned up and they said they weren’t doing any more auditions, as they were sick of seeing bass players. I had a friend who worked at CBS, Claire Russell, who got me an audition. So, I went along and Adam and Marco were there. I’d learned Dirk Wears White Sox, Kings of the Wild Frontier, Prince Charming, all of their songs. I’d learned the bass parts and the backing vocals. I was hungry for the gig. Adam was really responsive but Marco was his usual laid-back self. I then got a phone call from Adam asking if I wanted to go on a world tour. I met him the next day at Tootsie’s in Holland Park for breakfast and he said from now on I wouldn’t need to pay for anything and he’d put me on a wage straight away, and that’s how it all started.

Q. How did you make that adjustment from a relatively unknown musician to one thrust into the limelight?

CC. It was quite easy really. I had done my apprenticeship in bands and was ready for it. Maybe the first time where I turned up in a limo and was faced with flashing cameras that freaked me out, as I’d never had that before. Adam was laughing. He found it funny that I was so freaked out. I also wasn’t used to having my own roadie and having someone tune and clean my bass for me. That felt a bit odd.

Chris Constantinou, back right, in his Adam and The Ants days.

Q. It was pretty straightforward and good fun although I had never played with two drummers before. The first few albums were written with the idea of two drummers, so tracks like Killer In The Home, Ants Invasion and all that stuff just worked, it had a great energy about it. On the Vive Le Rock album we had one amazing drummer, Bob Wiczling (The Count).

Q. How come you weren’t involved in the recording the album Strip in 1983?

CC. I had gone to my mum’s for Christmas and Adam’s manager called me and asked me to come to Sweden to make an album. I said that I was spending Christmas with my family so couldn’t make it `til after the holidays. The manager said he would call Bob The Count, the drummer, to sort the details out. In the end I think they just thought it would be more practical if Adam played the bass and Phil Collins, who was producing, the drums. They did a great job. I was chuffed to have been asked, but also in retrospect glad that I didn’t play on that album!

Q. What was Adam and the band setting out to create when you first started working on the record?

CC. When we started the album, it was a new era where he wanted to strip everything back to a four-piece band so it was just Bob, Marco, Adam and me. Adam gave me a cassette of Tenpole Tudor to listen to and a few books to read as references for the album and that was it. I loved working with Adam, he was one of the most creative and funny guys I’ve ever worked with.

Q. Tony Visconti produced the album and he’s worked with Bowie, Thin Lizzy and Marc Bolan amongst many others. What did you learn from working with him?

CC. Tony was quite strict with his recording regime back then. What I learned from him was that you don’t need a lot of time in the studio to get a lot done. He had a working pattern of 11am to 7pm. It was very set where you’d turn up at 11am and would work until lunchtime, and then work until 7pm. At 7pm, whatever we were doing, he’d shut his suitcase and go and come back the next day for an 11am start. The bulk of Vive Le Rock was recorded in two weeks, the bass and drums in two days, Adam did his vocals in one day and mostly first takes. I did my backing vocals with Adam in half a day and Marco spent some days recording his with Tony, who was so great with guitar sounds. We recorded a lot of extra tracks too for that album, including some that came out as bonus tracks and some on the B-Side Babies album. Tony didn’t make the recording process into a big deal, we just got on with it, the album still sounds great to me.

Q. You were also part of Adam Ant’s band for Live Aid in 1985. That must have been an incredible day for you?

CC. I didn’t actually realise at the time how big a deal it was. I was pretty laid back and used to being around famous people at that point. I remember Marco telling me that we were doing a charity gig and I put it into my little Musicians’ Union diary and just wrote, “charity gig”. There were no rehearsals needed, as we were playing all the time so knew all the songs. We did a soundcheck the night before. We were booked into a hotel by the stadium, as we were one of the first on and they didn’t want us to get stuck in traffic. When I looked out of the window in the morning, I could see all of these people coming up and there was this feeling that something very special was happening.

Q. Were you disappointed only to get to perform Vive Le Rock on stage?

CC. I don’t really know what happened. I thought we were going to play Ant Music, Goody Two Shoes, Kings of the Wild Frontier and Vive Le Rock, but was told we were just doing Vive Le Rock. To me it wasn’t a big deal, and I was thankful just to be able to do the one song at such a historic gig. When we walked on stage the heat and energy of the audience hit me straight away. I was ghosting Adam’s vocals for all of the song, so was stuck to the microphone that was set up right next to the drums. That was annoying for me, as I was usually up front with Adam, so in between the parts that I was singing I’d go up to the front of the stage. I don’t think I’ve seen the footage of the show since.

Q. Did you stick around all day or did you head off after your set?

CC. I came off stage and nothing much was happening. It was all very laid back, so I thought I’d go back home, as I only lived in Lancaster Gate. When I got back, I could see all these people in the street partying. I asked the taxi driver what was going on and he said ‘Live Aid!’! It then dawned on me that I’d been part of this and it was so much bigger than I ever thought. I went to the pub on the corner of Craven Terrace, I think it was called The Mitre and what was on the TV? Live Aid. So, I got a taxi and went straight back. I still had my backstage pass and I got back in time to see The Who, one of my other favourite bands, from the side of the stage. Seeing Townsend and Daltrey together from the side of the stage was incredible, the energy off them was so powerful.

Q. Why did you decide to part ways with Adam Ant shortly after that show?

CC. I think we were on tour in America in October and I just felt that I’d had enough. I wasn’t feeling it any more. Adam was a very close friend of mine and felt a huge loyalty to him after what he’d given me, and I didn’t want to fake it every night. I went to the tour manager and said that I didn’t want to do the Japanese tour in the February but would stay on until they got someone else in. The Japanese tour didn’t end up happening anyway.

Q. Are you still in touch with Adam?

CC. Last time I saw him he was playing at the Soho Festival. I was walking through Soho and I heard someone playing a stripped-down version of Prince Charming and it was Adam on stage with some busking musicians. He saw me watching and said “Oh hello, Chrissy boy” and we went to a big party afterwards in Bar Italia. His manager asked me if I would be interested in touring with Adam again.

Q. In the early ’90s you hooked up with Annabella Lwin from Bow Wow Wow. How did that collaboration come about?

CC. It might have been through Bob, the drummer. He asked if I wanted to do something with Annabella. She’d come down to his house and we’d record on his home studio in his bedroom. We recorded quickly, like I do now with Jenna, so I have hundreds of songs with Annabella that haven’t been released yet, but that is something I am looking at doing. The songs are pretty much finished and just need some post-production. There’s a lot of energy there and they sound really good. We worked with her three or four times a week and signed to Sony, and sadly ended up with one of the worst A&R people I have ever worked with, who, along with a dinosaur American manager destroyed the band. The last time I saw Annabella was in Soho Square after a disastrous meeting with our A&R person. She walked to the right towards the Hari Krishna place and I walked to the left to the nearest pub.

Q. Guy Chambers was involved as a writer too. Did you get the chance to write with Guy?

CC. Yes, that was when we were signed to Sony. He had been playing keyboards with World Party and he came down to the studio and we did some tracks with him. We clicked really well and we have stayed in touch. I remember one time I went to his flat in Highgate and we opened a bottle of wine. He seemed disillusioned with the business and said he was going to give it up and become a piano teacher. I told him to give it some more time before making that decision and within the year he started working with Robbie Williams. We’ve actually recently been in touch and we’re talking about working together on some new collaboration.

Q. In the 2000s you worked again with Marco Pirroni in The Wolfmen. Had you stayed in touch over the years since you worked with Adam Ant, or bumped into him and reconnected?

CC. We stayed in touch over the years and used to go clubbing. When we put The Wolfmen together it was easy as we got on so well and it just clicked.

Q. You handled the lead vocals on this one. Was that always the plan or could you not find anyone that fitted what you wanted to do?

CC. I’d done backing vocals for Adam Ant and had my own band JackieOnAssid before that where I was the singer and frontman, so it was an obvious choice.

Q. You had Sinead O`Connor in as a guest vocalist on Jackie Is It My Birthday. How did she become involved in The Wolfmen?

CC. I wrote Posing As An Angel at 327 City Road on a Sunday afternoon after an all-nighter with my friend Russell. I played it live with my band JackieOnAssid and recorded it on my Tascam four-track machine and did a self-release of the track on CDBABY. When we were making our second Wolfmen album, we were stuck for songs, so I brought in some of my old songs and suggested Posing As An Angel, which I renamed for The Wolfmen release as Jackie Is It My Birthday. We recording it with Steve Musters producing, and I thought it would sound amazing with Sinead O`Connor singing it. Marco said that wouldn’t be easy. I knew that Marco had worked with her in the past, so persuaded him to ask her. He gave me her email address which I sent the track to and I got a text back from Sinead saying that she loved the song and my vocal. I was really blown away. She recorded her vocals in Ireland and send them back to us. Courtney Taylor-Taylor from The Dandy Warhols and Jacob Portrait mixed the track in The Dandys’ studio in Portland. What they sent back was magical, it sounded amazing. I have been working on another version of my song Posing As An Angel with RudeGRL.

Q. You also co-wrote some songs with Marco and with Sinead O`Connor on her How About I Be Me (And You Be You) album in 2012 and played as part of her band too. How was she to work with on a creative level?

CC. After that we co-wrote some tracks with Sinead. We went into the studio and recorded three or four songs that ended up on the album. Sinead was on another level to work with. She was very humble and when she did her vocals she’d look up and ask if it was OK and we were ‘Yeah!’ She was brilliant. It was such an eye-opening experience for me to see how a great vocalist recorded their vocals.

Q. You got to work with Lou Reed too. How did that come about?

CC. I still have the email from his manager which said “Mr Lou Reed loves what you have done and has agreed to a 50:50 writers share”. It was kind of weird, as it was a song by his band The Primitives and he had this song called Do The Ostrich which was like a studio thing. He never really finished it and it just said “Do the ostrich, do the ostrich” and the same chords, all the way through. Marco said that it was a great song but it didn’t really go anywhere, so he suggested writing some lyrics, a bridge and a verse and we used what he’d written for the chorus. When we recorded it, we left a little bit of Lou in the background behind my voice. We thought it was a bit cheeky but why not, so we sent it to him. We didn’t expect him to come back and say that he loved it, but he did and that’s how it happened.

Q. Would you have liked to have written with him in a face-to-face context?

CC. Yes, I would, that would have been amazing. I’ve heard so many different stories about him and you just don’t know how you’ll relate to people, so you never know how it would have been, but I’d certainly like to have tried.

Q. One of your most popular bands that you’ve been involved with was The Mutants, a band you put together that featured Rat Scabies (The Damned). How did that happen?

CC. I met up with Eugene from Vive Le Rock magazine and Dave Collins in The Ship pub and said I had this idea for a band, so we had a few drinks and brain-stormed and I wrote down a list of everyone that I wanted to work with. The next day we started phoning and emailing people and it gained its own momentum. Rat wanted to be involved, and soon Neville Staple, Charlie Harper, Beki Bondage and Wilko Johnson joined up. Texas Terri told me that Wayne Kramer from MC5 was in town, so he came down to the studio and he was one of Wilko Johnson’s heroes and credits MC5 with changing his life. We have hours of recordings of us jamming together in the studio along with Norman Watt Roy from The Blockheads. We actually won an award in America for Walking Wounded, which was a song that we did with Jake Burns from Stiff Little Fingers. I think there’s some great tracks on those albums, not because I wrote them or played on the album but because of the people involved.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Walking Wounded (feat. Are The Mutants on the back-burner now or is there some activity on the horizon?

CC. I think One Thousand Motels, which is what I’m doing now with Rat Scabies, is a revival of that in some ways … I saw a review of the first One Thousand Motels album 2% Out Of Sync which referred to the sound as ‘the son of The Mutants’.

Q. Those Mutants albums are pretty difficult to get hold of these days in a physical format. Do you have any plans to re-release them?

CC. Maybe. One of the tracks on Tokyo Nights, called Bamboo Moon, has become a big hit through the Netflix show Money Heist, where it’s featured in the big love scene in Series 1 Episode 2.

Q. You’ve continued working with Rat Scabies in One Thousand Motels and have recently released your first album, 2% Out Of Sync, together. That’s a great name for a band. Does that symbolise the life you’ve had on the road over the years?

CC. Yes, I think it does. When we were in Mission Sound studios in New York we were trying to think of a name and we were throwing names around and we didn’t like any of the names suggested. I scrawled down a name on a pad and passed it round. Rat wasn’t so sure, but we looked at it again the next day and Rat changed it a bit. Later we were back at The Ship pub and Rat sketched a logo for OTM on a napkin – that’s when we agreed on the name and the logo which was sent to Gothman to work on.

Q. How does One Thousand Motels differ from The Mutants?

CC. I think because there were so many characters involved in The Mutants projects it meant that it was hard to take it live, although we did. When I was working with Rat, I was playing some of my demos and he said that they sounded really good so we should record them. The appealing thing about this was that it was going to be quick and easy.

Q. Do you hope to play some live shows together at some point?

CC. Yes, that would be great, along with live shows with RudeGRL.

Q. Looking forward, what plans do you have for the coming months, and do you have any projects that you hope to bring forward over the coming year?

CC. Brand New Cadillac is out on 25th January on Cleopatra Records. RudeGRL & CC are also currently writing and recording a four-track EP for Universal Music and our second album. One Thousand Motels’ second album, featuring Desert legend Sean Wheeler, called Get In Where You Fit In, is out in April. I have my book to finish and put out, and of course I hope we can get out and play live this year. Currently working on the third One Thousand Motels album with Rat.
