{"id":4828,"date":"2020-11-04T14:39:54","date_gmt":"2020-11-04T14:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=4828"},"modified":"2020-11-04T14:39:57","modified_gmt":"2020-11-04T14:39:57","slug":"the-obgms-give-a-modern-and-multi-cultural-twist-to-cross-genre-punk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=4828","title":{"rendered":"The OBGMs give a modern and multi-cultural twist to cross-genre punk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ALBUM REVIEW: The OBGMs \u2013 The Ends (Black Box Recordings)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadian punk trio <strong>The OBGMs<\/strong> come from the same Toronto scene as PUP and Fucked Up, but remain something of a rarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s because they&#8217;re fronted by a black man, and in a scene noted for its diversity, that&#8217;s still uncommon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Ends<\/strong>, which comes three years after the band&#8217;s self-titled debut album, is a short, sharp blast of energy, which sees The OBGMs (short for The oOoh Baby Gimme Mores) blaze through 10 songs in 24 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Produced by the award winning Dave Schiffman (Trash Talk, PUP, Rage Against The Machine), it wears the band&#8217;s influences (and their producer&#8217;s) on its sleeve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"378\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-OBGMs-pic-by%40savebeee.jpg?resize=640%2C378\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-OBGMs-pic-by%40savebeee.jpg?resize=1024%2C604&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-OBGMs-pic-by%40savebeee.jpg?resize=300%2C177&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-OBGMs-pic-by%40savebeee.jpg?resize=768%2C453&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-OBGMs-pic-by%40savebeee.jpg?resize=1536%2C906&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-OBGMs-pic-by%40savebeee.jpg?resize=2048%2C1208&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-OBGMs-pic-by%40savebeee.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-OBGMs-pic-by%40savebeee.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>The OBGMs. Pic by @savebee<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vocalist\/guitarist Densil McFarlane admits it&#8217;s not a cheery record: &#8220;This album is about death, wanting to die, and fighting for something to live for &#8211; it\u2019s the end of all things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It bursts into life with the single <strong>Outsah<\/strong>, packed with insistent guitar riffs and tribal beats courtesy of drummer Colanthony Humphrey. He&#8217;s a versatile player, capable of a range of different styles &#8211; probably down to the band&#8217;s roots as a hip-hop outfit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bassist Joseph Brosnan locks in perfectly to complete a tight rhythm section, while McFarlane throws out the sort of distorted riffs you&#8217;d expect from disaffected white suburban kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An intensity runs right through the record, particularly the combative <strong>Fight Song<\/strong>, and standout track <strong>All My Friends<\/strong>, which sits somewhere between Weezer and Nirvana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The OBGMs - All My Friends (Official Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EGTt-Z_JB9Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not all noisy angst though: <strong>To Death<\/strong> has dreamy vocals which recall Blur, while <strong>Not Again<\/strong> is a slice of frenzied garage-rock which The Strokes would be proud of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The OBGMs look again to NYC for <strong>Karen O&#8217;s<\/strong>, named after the Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer, and while there&#8217;s plenty of power here, there&#8217;s lots of nuance too, often within the same song, such as the closing <strong>Move On<\/strong>, which is another highlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarlane is aware The OBGMs are different: \u201cThis is a black-fronted punk band, and that\u2019s really important. Rock n\u2019 roll is mostly white suburban kids. I\u2019m aiming for that. We\u2019d prefer the love &#8211; we\u2019re full of love &#8211; but I\u2019d rather you hate me than feel indifference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s too much hate in the world right now, so why don&#8217;t you give this album of thoroughly modern genre-bending punk a spin and spread a little more love? <strong>8\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div
