{"id":3827,"date":"2020-07-04T18:59:13","date_gmt":"2020-07-04T17:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=3827"},"modified":"2020-07-04T19:05:33","modified_gmt":"2020-07-04T18:05:33","slug":"business-as-usual-for-the-real-mckenzies-as-they-serve-up-another-slice-of-rousing-celtic-punk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=3827","title":{"rendered":"Business as usual for The Real McKenzies as they serve up another slice of rousing Celtic punk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ALBUM REVIEW: The Real McKenzies &#8211; Beer And Loathing (Fat Wreck Chords)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don&#8217;t know what Canadian Celtic punks <a href=\"http:\/\/realmckenzies.com\/\"><strong>The Real McKenzies<\/strong><\/a> are about by now, 10 studio albums into their career, you probably never will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blending driving punk rhythms with traditional melodies, the band haven&#8217;t changed a bit since they were formed by Scottish punk poet laureate Paul McKenzie in 1992 \u2013 apart from the steady churn of members which have left him as the only constant, that is!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while other bands have mellowed or lost their edge as they&#8217;ve got older, that&#8217;s not the case for the McKenzies, whose sound remains the same. They continue to blend guitars with the skirl of the bagpipes, spinning yarns of times long past, remembering heroes and recounting endless adventures and drunken revelries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their songs are often rebellious, sometimes poignant and frequently anthemic, and your record collection is a better place with The Real McKenzies in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies.jpg?resize=640%2C446\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies.jpg?resize=1024%2C714&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies.jpg?resize=300%2C209&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies.jpg?resize=768%2C535&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies.jpg?resize=1536%2C1070&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies.jpg?w=1722&amp;ssl=1 1722w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies.jpg?w=1280 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After instrumental opener <strong>A Widow&#8217;s Watch<\/strong> we&#8217;re down to business with the gentle, lilting <strong>Overtoun Bridge<\/strong>, an ode to a structure in Dumbarton, Scotland, known as &#8216;the dog suicide bridge, due to the number of canines which have met their end there, possibly for supernatural reasons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More upbeat is <strong>Big Foot Steps<\/strong>, a proper McKenzies full-kilter banger of a tune, as is title track <strong>Beer &amp; Loathing<\/strong>, with both showing the power the band are capable if.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cock Up Your Beaver<\/strong> might sound like it&#8217;s going to be laced with double intendres, but it&#8217;s their take on a 1792 Rabbie Burns poem, which, perhaps improbably, refers to a gentleman&#8217;s hat made of said rodent!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nary Do Gooder<\/strong>, about the joys of being a committed drinker, and <strong>Death Of The Winnipeg Scene<\/strong>, lamenting the demise of punk rock in the Canadian city, keep things speeding along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies-live.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies-live.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies-live.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies-live.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies-live.jpg?resize=1536%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies-live.jpg?resize=2048%2C1365&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies-live.jpg?w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/the-real-mckenzies-live.jpg?w=1920 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Paul McKenzie is The Real McKenzies&#8217; only constant member. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>36 Barrels<\/strong> is about a failed assassination attempt of King James I, while <strong>Whose Child Is This<\/strong> kicks off with a healthy helping of bagpipes, and <strong>The Ballad of Cpl Hornburg<\/strong> is a homage to a Canadian soldier who died serving his country in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Cremation Of Sam McGee<\/strong>, a poem most famously recited by Johnny Cash, is probably my favourite song on this album, anthemic and full of swaggering guitars, while things are rounded off by another bagpipe-fuelled instrumental, the breakneck <strong>A Seafarer&#8217;s Return<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, it&#8217;s very much business as usual for <strong>The Real McKenzies<\/strong>, and in these troubled times we should be most thankful for that. 8\/10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Beer And Loathing is available now from all good record stores, or <a href=\"https:\/\/fatwreck.com\/collections\/new-releases\/products\/beer-and-loathing\"><strong>direct from Fat Wreck Chords HERE<\/strong><\/a> on CD, vinyl and download.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ALBUM REVIEW: The Real McKenzies &#8211;
