The 1977 – The Year Punk Broke boxset (Cherry Red Records).<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Punk\u2019s\nyear zero, when it exploded onto the unsuspecting British public, was 1976, but\nonly a handful of records were released that year, with the first, the Damned\u2019s\nNew Rose, not released until late October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it\nfollowed that 1977 would be the year that punk really began to take off on, as\na largely DIY network of clubs, artists, fanzines, labels and distributors joined\nan indie revolution which would have a lasting effect on pop culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tidal\nwave of new, young bands burst forth with three-minute adrenalin rushes of raw\nexcitement, anger and energy, even if, in some cases, they had limited\ntechnical ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Here,\nover the course of 3 CDs, Cherry Red, the masters of such compilations, bring\ntogether most of the main movers and shakers, as well as some of the bands\nwhose star rose briefly, and then fizzled out or disappeared as quickly as it\nhad arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So while\nthere\u2019s no Sex Pistols or Clash (pretty standard for a punk comp, as their\nlabels keep tight control over their legacy), many of the year\u2019s major\nbreakthrough acts and cult favourites are included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus we\nhave tracks by many of the new bands, including The Jam, The Damned, The\nBoomtown Rats, Buzzcocks, The Stranglers, Generation X, Sham 69, The Only Ones,\nThe Rezillos, Ultravox! (sounding a lot like Roxy Music!), 999, X-Ray Spex,\nATV, The Boys and The Vibrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The older\nguard \u2013 the pub rockers, centred around London, who jumped aboard the punk\nbandwagon \u2013 are represented by the more technically-proficient likes of Eddie\n& The Hot Rods, Graham Parker & The Rumour and The Count Bishops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other key\nnames include Motorhead (Lemmy\u2019s metal band, much-loved by punks) and former\nNew York Doll Johnny Thunders\u2019 band The Heartbreakers, who recorded in London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although\nyou\u2019ll hear plenty of familiar songs (eg TRB\u2019s 2-4-6-8 Motorway, Slaughter\n& The Dogs\u2019 Where Have All The Boot Boys Gone), there\u2019s plenty here which\nwill be new to you, unless you have a very deep knowledge of \u201977 punk indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who\nremembers Regulations by Neon Hearts, which features sax alongside\nBuzzcocks-like guitar, Development Corporations by The Now, or Art Attacks\u2019 Arabs\nIn \u2018Arrods? No, me neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re\njust an example of the many gems you\u2019ll find in this set, which promises to be\nthe first in a series of year-based compilations by the label that does this\nsort of thing best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you enjoyed previous Cherry Red boxsets, such as 2016\u2019s 4-CD compilation Action Time Vision 1976-1979<\/strong>, documenting punk on indie labels, and the power pop\/new wave set Harmony In My Head<\/strong> (2017), you\u2019ll find plenty to enjoy here. 8\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
