Pic: Alexia Carroll.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catchy\nriffs and infectious melodies are something they do very well, but\nthere&#8217;s a dark underbelly \u2013 hardly surprising, as Poli\nwas in rehab during the writing of the album, and has penned some\nextremely self-searching lyrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opener\n<strong>Dearly Departed<\/strong> starts with a roll call of famous dead people\n\u2013 JFK, Marilyn Monroe, Sid and Nancy \u2013 and asks what we learned\nfrom their deaths, while <strong>Double Arrows Down<\/strong> is\nabout van Dam&#8217;s struggle with diabetes \u2013 she had a diabetic seizure\non tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things move up a notch with the Natural Born Killers-inspired <strong>Zero Remorse<\/strong>, which features dual vocals from the co-frontwomen, while <strong>Notre Dame<\/strong> seems to be a metaphor for a failed relationship on which the singer pinned all her hopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Bombpops - Notre Dame (Official Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K7YEFju2p8k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sad\nTo Me<\/strong>, which features one of the best riffs on the album, is\nquite the reverse, about being unable to let go of a bad\nrelationship: \u201cI doubt that I will give a shit, About the fact that\nyou&#8217;re a prick, I bet you that I will forget, When I&#8217;m done writing\nthese lyrics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can\u2019t\nCome Clean<\/strong> is about another bad relationship, this time with\nalcohol, while <strong>Blood Pact<\/strong>, also seemingly inspired by Natural\nBorn Killers, reminds me very much of Bad Religion, and <strong>In The\nDoghouse <\/strong>addresses infidelity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nfrenetic <strong>13 Stories Down<\/strong>, again warning of the dangers of\ndrink, is possibly the album&#8217;s standout track, and could have been\nwritten by Alkaline Trio, with its stark admission \u201cI&#8217;m not an\nalcoholic, I just play one on the weekends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Radio\nSilence<\/strong> is another break-up song, with bubblegum pop vocals and a\ndelicious guitar riff, while <strong>House\nOn Fire<\/strong>,\nwith its swaggering riff, sounds like a single, until you hear\n\u201chooks,\nwhips, and rubber dicks, are scattered all over the hallway, this is\nour new normal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nalbum closes with <strong>Southbound\nStranger,<\/strong>\nanother break-up song, which ends in bleak fashion with our\nprotagonist concluding: \u201c I\nbought a gun,\nNot\nsure if I know how to use one,\nThey\ntell me that there&#8217;s nothing to it,\nJust\npull the trigger, you can do it,\nYou\nleft me in L.A\n&#8230;\u201d
