Formed in\nDenver, Colorado, back in 2001, Reno Divorce have spent the last 18 years\nforging a solid reputation for themselves on the punk rock scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re\ndifficult to pigeonhole, as their sound contains elements of Orange County\npunk, a dash of honky tonk country, and a healthy slice of rockabilly swagger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band they\nremind me of most \u2013 and I know this is hardly original \u2013 is Social Distortion\nat their best, and if that\u2019s not a recommendation, I don\u2019t know what is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019ve\nreleased four full-length albums and a handful of singles and EPs, and after\nmissing their one and only appearance at Rebellion in Blackpool in 2017 due to\nthe sort of clashes inevitable at a festival of that size, I was glad to be\nable to catch them on my doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nthree-piece \u2013 who seem to have shed a guitarist somewhere along the way – opened\nwith Stumble, their own take on the Link Wray instrumental Rumble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From\nthere they blazed headlong into more than an hour of upbeat punk rock \u2018n\u2019 roll,\nwith lots of energy and attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like\nSocial D\u2019s Mike Ness, Reno Divorce frontman Brent Loveday is a storyteller,\narmed with a low-strung Gretsch and a fistful of socially-aware lyrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\ndelivers his words with passion and conviction, while laying down coruscating guitar\nriffs, as bassist Andy Brown and new drummer Sleepy lock into the rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Were\nYou Saying? is a step back to their debut album Naysayers And Yesmen, while A\n.45 Will Pay the Rent, from their second album, is an early set highlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their\nmost recent album, 2012\u2019s Lover\u2019s Leap, contributes a handful of tracks, including\nRep To Protect and Ill-Gotten gains, though sadly Three Time Loser is a notable\nabsentee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band\u2019s\nmost recent offering has been a couple of EPs, Ship Of Fools and Fairweather Friends,\nand much of the set is based around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ship Of\nFools and She\u2019s In Love With Avenue are the pick of the bunch, and things are\nlivened up with a couple of covers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dolly\nParton\u2019s Jolene and Motorhead\u2019s Ace Of Spades are two songs coming from very\ndifferent places, but offer an insight into where Reno Divorce take their\ninspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a\ntwo-song encore of Ana Lee and the excellent Lovable Loser the show\u2019s over,\nwith Loveday urging fans in the small but appreciative crowd to get their merch\nnow \u201c\u2019cos fuck knows when we\u2019ll be back\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Credit to\nTrillians for putting on gigs like this, and let\u2019s hope Reno Divorce\u2019s first-ever\nvisit to Newcastle isn\u2019t also their last.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
