ALBUM REVIEW: Spanish Love Songs \u2013 Brave Faces Everyone (Pure Noise Records)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Spanish\nLove Songs are a classic example of why it’s always good to get along\nearly to a show to catch the support bands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I saw them recently supporting The Menzingers on their UK tour, and was instantly won over by their heart-on-the-sleeve blue collar punk rock. If I’d just turned up for the headliners, they might have passed me by entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nfive-piece formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2014, and this is\ntheir third album \u2013 and what a record!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singer\nand songwriter Dylan Slocum admits previous album Schmaltz was an\ninsular collection of soul-searching songs and admitted: \u201cI don\u2019t\nwant to be the band where each album is me complaining about myself\nfor 40 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\nalthough he’s tried looking for positives in life \u2013 see song titles\nlike Optimism<\/strong> and the title track<\/strong> \u2013 this is another\nalbum which tackles weighty topics like addiction, depression, debt,\nmass shootings, and climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\npacks a powerful punch with some meaty riffs from Slocum and fellow\nguitarist Kyle McAulay, a tight rhythm section in bassist Trevor\nDietrich and drummer Ruben Duarte, while Meredith Van Woert adds a\nwelcome wash of keyboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slocum\nis a wonderful observational writer, soaking up the fine details of\nthe daily lives, fears and shattered dreams of those around him. He’s\nalready baring his soul on opening track Routine Pain<\/strong> when he\nsings: \u201cI’m so sick of saying sorry when I cry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Self-Destruction<\/strong>\nhas him promising \u201cit won’t be this bleak for ever\u201d, but\nimmediately answering: \u201cyeah right \u2026 have you seen me lately?\u201d,\nhis voice trembling with emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These\nare songs about the daily struggle to survive which is the reality\nfor many ordinary people who have to work two or three jobs, living\nfor the weekend, and, on Losers II<\/strong>, sinking into depression at\nhaving to be bailed out by your parents \u201cwhat’s gonna happen when\nthey’re dead?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nBeach Front Property<\/strong> he addresses a very modern fear \u2013\nterrorism \u2013 when he sings: \u201cI hate life these days … ducking\ninto my seat because someone brought a bag into a movie theater\u201d,\nand touches on losing faith when he concludes \u201cdon’t believe in\nGod, figure he’d be a better planner than this\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s\nbleak stuff, emo-punk in the truest sense, and all the more powerful\nfor it, but beneath the despair there’s a message of hope, urging\npeople to be less judgemental, and more empathetic to their fellow\nhuman beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 10 songs here will make you realise that whatever shit life is throwing at you, you’re not alone, and in Dylan Slocum, you’ve found someone who can eloquently voice what it’s like to be try to be a responsible adult in these troubled times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spanish Love Songs are masters at the same kind of personalised storytelling as Bruce Springsteen<\/strong>, The Gaslight Anthem<\/strong> and, yes, The Menzingers<\/strong>, and if you like any of those artists I can guarantee this will hit the spot. 9\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
