ALBUM REVIEW: The Big Moon – Walking Like We Do (Fiction Records)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This second album by London-based indie four-piece The Big Moon<\/strong> is the long-awaited follow-up to their Mercury Music Prize-nominated debut Love In The 4th<\/sup> Dimension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where their first record was a straightforward collection of love songs, this one is more about trying to make sense of the world we live in, but as \u2018difficult\u2019 second albums go they\u2019ve nailed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sees them take a step back from the guitar-driven indie rock of their first album, towards a much more mature sound, without losing any of their charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My introduction to them came last year when they supported Pixies <\/strong>on their UK tour, and I instantly loved them (read our review here<\/strong><\/a>). I did wonder how they would follow a debut record which won such acclaim, but they seem to have taken it in their stride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opening track It\u2019s Easy Then<\/strong>, the lead single, provides a gentle introduction, and it\u2019s followed by the reflective Your Light<\/strong>, which vocalist Juliette Jackson says is about \u201cthe one person or thing in your life that knows how to come in and open your curtains and light up the darkness\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s one of the strongest songs on the album, with Jackson\u2019s warm voice inviting you in and persuading you to stay, with wonderful melodies and one of their catchiest tunes yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why<\/strong> questions the longevity of love, while Don\u2019t Think<\/strong> is musically sparse, but settles into a delicious groove, before soaring into 80s electro-pop territory, and big guitar riffs coming in halfway through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holy Roller <\/strong>cocks a snook at some of the negatives of modern life which have somehow become acceptable – payday loans, porno sites and contour kits -“I’m going to start a religion now, for all the kids with no future”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take A Piece<\/strong> is a lovely slice of shimmering ’90s pop about commitment, with Jackson promising “take a piece of me, put me on the pages of your life story, and I’ll give you everything, until there’s nothing left”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In truth there’s not a bad song among the 11 on offer, and The Big Moon are a band who are really growing on me, as I find something different to like about this album every time I listen to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a lovely listen from start to finish, best experienced to late at night, relaxing with a loved one and sharing a bottle of something nice. 7\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
