It was my New Year resolution to go to see more live music in 2019. All too often in the past, I\u2019d ducked out of attending things I wanted to see because I was too tired after a day at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

This year I had no such excuse. I took redundancy from my job midway through the year, set up this website to keep my hand in at writing and develop my interest in photography (no pun intended, honest!), and tried to go to as many gigs as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t set myself any targets. After all,\ngoing to a gig is often a spur of the moment thing, particularly if it\u2019s a\ngrassroots, DIY-type which doesn\u2019t require tickets to be bought in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My tally for the year is a respectable 46 gigs<\/strong>. That includes four days at a festival and a couple of all-dayers with multiple bands on the line-up, which I\u2019ve only counted as one gig each. \u201cI\u2019d be happy with that at your age,\u201d pointed out my son. Thanks, son \u2013 I think\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If my maths is correct I\u2019ve seen 188 artists<\/strong> (mostly bands, plus the odd solo artist, and one DJ\u2026), including 92 for the first time<\/strong>, at 17 different venues<\/strong>. I probably missed half as many gigs again, for various reasons (usually family or football commitments).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My most-seen band was Gimp Fist<\/strong> (five times), followed by Kickback Generation<\/strong> (four times), which seems appropriate, as a gig featuring them both at Hunwick WMC in January was my first of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights? There were many. I\u2019d seen The Old Firm Casuals<\/strong> before, but they were on fire at the Riverside in Newcastle in February, as were Ruts DC<\/strong> later the same month as they celebrated the 40th<\/sup> anniversary of The Crack, the only \u2018proper\u2019 album by their forebears The Ruts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I saw my favourite band ever, Stiff Little Finger<\/strong>s, for the umpteenth time the following month, with Eddie and the Hot Rods<\/strong> supporting. I\u2019d never seen them before, and it was a gig which was to take on added poignancy later in the year with the sad death of Hot Rods frontman Barrie Masters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April saw my get round to finally seeing Holy Moly & The Cracker<\/strong>s, who were recommended to me a couple of years ago, and a bonus was \u2018finding\u2019 Snakerattlers<\/strong>, who supported them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Britpop icons Suede<\/strong> were another first for me, and April became an excellent month with further gigs by Martha<\/strong>, Half Man Half Biscuit<\/strong> and The Blue Carpet Band<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May saw three gigs in six days, with the pick of them probably The Undertones<\/strong> and Neville Stapl<\/strong>e at the Boiler Shop, while I celebrated my redundancy by going to see Skids<\/strong> the next night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Soapgirls<\/strong> and Maid Of Ace<\/strong> showed that sisters are doing it for themselves with excellent gigs at Trillians in July, and August of course means Rebellion Festival <\/strong>and four days of beer and punk rock in Blackpool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highlights there really were too many to\nmention. It\u2019s a festival which seems to get better every year, just when you\nthink it can\u2019t possibly top the previous one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mid-August saw a trip to Glasgow to see The Cure<\/strong> \u2013 a real bucket-list band for my other half, who has loved them for 40 years but never seen them. They were excellent, despite the mud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bar Stool Preachers<\/strong> played a superb set at a happily-revitalised Trillians, before Pixies<\/strong> turned in a mammoth 39-song set at the O2 Academy, and September was rounded off with the punk all-dayer North East Calling<\/strong>, where The Adicts<\/strong> stole the show from the headlining Cockney Rejects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I surpassed my gig-a-week target in both October and November, and although December\u2019s gig-going was truncated by a family illness, it was great to round off the year at an absolutely packed Trillians with a show by Crashed Out<\/strong> and Rigid Digits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2020 already looks like another great year of\nlive music. I\u2019ve already got my eye on gigs featuring Giuda, The Interrupters, the\nMenzingers, the Subways, Ash, Rezillos, The Toy Dolls, and many more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
