LIVE REVIEW: Skids, O2 Academy, Newcastle, 8th June 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skids were never your typical 100mph punk band, thanks\nmainly to the lyricism of singer Richard Jobson and musicianship of guitarist Stuart\nAdamson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dunfermline band crafted some of the most memorable tunes of the late 70s – a time when exciting new acts were everywhere in the charts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adamson, sadly, took his own life in 2001, which most\npeople thought ended any chance of a Skids reunion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they reformed in 2007 to pay tribute to him, with Big\nCountry bandmate Bruce Watson and his son Jamie sharing guitar duties, and, to\ntheir fans\u2019 delight, became a going concern again in 2017 for a 40th<\/sup>\nanniversary tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also released a highly-acclaimed new album, Burning\nCities, and have continued to play live, mixing old material and new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gig was a warm-up for a big show on June 21 at the\nRoyal Albert Hall in London. Who would have guessed that in 1977?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First up were a couple of local bands to get the crowd in\nthe mood, and they both did that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room was very sparsely attended when the opening band, Zeitgeist 77<\/strong>, took to the stage, but the Teessiders\u2019 brand of melodic punk went down a treat with the early arrivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the first time I\u2019d seen the band, who mix a \u201977 punk sound with some melodic post-punk, and songs like End Of Days and Just An Illusion certainly hit the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next up were Crashed Out<\/strong>, and anyone who has seen these Jarrow lads will know just what to expect \u2013 punked up street rock \u2018n\u2019 roll of the highest order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They didn\u2019t disappoint, wheeling out classics like The\nJarrow Song, The Town That Died and even a cover of Motorhead\u2019s  Ace Of Spades, as well as a couple of new\nsongs from the work in progress that will be their next album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time then for the main attraction, and it was clear the Skids <\/strong>were in crowd-pleasing mood from the off, with the opening salvo of Animation, Of One Skin and Charade taking us all back to our youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jobson was in fine form, dancing dervish-like around the\nstage while the Watsons picked out some coruscating riffs, and drummer Mike\nBaillie and bassist Bill Simpson laid down a thunderous rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band were clearly loving every minute of being on\nstage in front of an adoring audience, which may have been down on previous\nvisits numbers-wise, but they were preaching to the converted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New songs were present and correct in the form of Kings\nOf The New World Order and One Last Chance, and they were greeted like old\nfriends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it was the oldies the crowd wanted, and the Skids\nobliged, with The Saints Are Coming, Working For The Yankee Dollar, Hurry On\nBoys, and Masquerade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a medley featuring their own TV Stars (with\nupdated lyrics, including \u201cBoris Johnson \u2013 what a wanker!\u201d), the Sex Pistols\u2019\nPretty Vacant and the Buzzcocks\u2019 What Do I Get).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And they left the best to last, ending with Into The\nValley followed by one of my own personal Skids favourites, Out Of Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A two-song encore comprising Happy To Be With You (from\n1980\u2019s The Absolute Game album), and another fan favourite, The Olympian (from\n1979\u2019s Days In Europa) left the crowd begging for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jobson, who performed the entire gig with a smile on his\nface as wide as the Tyne, said the band are taking a break (for an acoustic\ntour this autumn), but promised to return next year.  On this form that can\u2019t happen too soon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
