Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As post-election pick-me-ups go, this was probably as good as it gets: a local band recently returned from a long break firing on all cylinders in front of a (nearly) hometown crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, what better way to spend Friday the 13<sup>th<\/sup>,\nas the nation came to terms with a landslide Tory victory at the previous day\u2019s\ngeneral election, than with The Futureheads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sunderland indie\/post-punk band had nailed\ntheir colours firmly to the socialist mast in the run-up to #GE2019, and were\ndespondent at Boris Johnson\u2019s runaway victory. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next up were Indoor Pets,\na Kent band who added their condolences to those still smarting from the\nelection result, and said they were pleased to be in another part of the\ncountry which stayed red. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Futureheads formed in 2000,\nwhen Barry Hyde (guitar and vocals), Ross Millard (guitar and vocals), David\n\u2018Jaff\u2019 Craig (bass and vocals) met at Sunderland College.&nbsp; Barry\u2019s brother Dave joined later on drums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their jagged guitar-based\nindie rock, influenced by the likes of Gang Of Four, XTC and Wire, quickly\ngained a local following, and after a handful of well-received EPs and singles,\nthey released their self-titled debut album in July 2004. It was well-enough\nreceived, but it was the release as a single of the only non-original track,\ntheir take on Kate Bush\u2019s Hounds Of Love, which give them lift off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The album achieved gold status, and they released four more before taking a break in 2013 to pursue other interests. Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One song \u2013 I forget which\n\u2013 saw a fan shout \u2018again!\u2019, which prompted the bemused response from the stage:\n\u201cThat\u2019s not how it works \u2013 who does that? Pic: Gary Welford.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s one of the band\u2019s\nstrengths that they don\u2019t rely on one singer, instead sharing vocal duties, and\nthey sped towards the finishing line with a five-song salvo including non-album\nsingle Christmas Was Better In The 80s and Good Night Out from latest album\nPowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They ended the 75-minute\nshow with The Beginning Of The Twist and were gone, promising we\u2019d see them\nagain, though gigs these days have to be arranged around Jaff\u2019s day job as a\nteacher.
