BOXSET REVIEW: Punishment Of Luxury \u2013 A Puppet Life (The\nComplete Recordings) (Cherry Red Records)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m ashamed to say that despite being a\nnative of the North East England, Punishment Of Luxury were a band who had passed\nme by \u2013 until now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formed on Tyneside at the end of 1976, they issued their acclaimed debut single Puppet Life on leading indie label Small Wonder in 1978.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That earned them a deal with major label United Artists for their debut album Laughing Academy<\/strong>, which came out in 1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The debut single opens disc one of this handsome 5CD set from Cherry Red<\/strong>, which gathers pretty much everything they\u2019ve done to date, and if, like me, you\u2019re a Punilux newbie, what a place to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They fused the energy of punk with the\nartistic values of musical theatre, and although they\u2019re usually labelled\npost-punk, some of their songs have as much in common with ELO as bands like\nthe Talking Heads, who were making waves elsewhere, to much more acclaim. I\u2019d\nliken them to PiL, but easier to warm to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first album is a thing of beauty\nindeed \u2013 how had I never heard this? \nYes, it\u2019s edgy and jagged, off-kilter at times, with sudden chord changes,\nbut how can you not like the guitar riff in The Message, the slightly disturbing\nObsession, the punky Babalon and Brain Bomb, or the frankly bonkers B-side Jellyfish?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listening to them now, at a distance of\n40 years, they\u2019re a clear influence on early noughties guitar bands like The\nFutureheads and Franz Ferdinand, and if you\u2019re into those bands I\u2019d thoroughly\nrecommend this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How it all went wrong is something of a\nmystery. As band leader Neville Atkinson explains in the sleeve notes, they\nwere called to a meeting at the record company and told they were \u201cnot really\nsuitable for today\u2019s modern market\u201d. Not commercial enough? Probably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were working on a second album when\nthey were dropped and it was eventually released as Gigantic Days<\/strong>, a mail order cassette, in 1981. It contains songs\nlike Fascicult Barbaraclique, Blood Money and Auschwitz. Yep, definitely not\ncommercial, but still sounding like nothing else out there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Gigantic Days and a host of other songs\nfrom the time which were used for the 1997 compilation Revolution By Numbers by\nNewcastle label Overground Records make up disc two (including the\nfabulously-titled My Wife\u2019s In Love With A Polar Bear), along with four tracks\nfrom a previously unreleased 1978 John Peel session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next stop was Red Rhino, a York-based\nrecord company who liked the band, and it released 7<\/strong>, the 1983 mini-album which forms the basis of disc three.\nPleasingly, this version has the track Gasman, missing from earlier reissues,\nrestored, and it adds the single Hold Me (Never Mould Me), which is probably\nthe most commercial thing they ever did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It adds unissued single Doubting Thomas,\nplus seven tracks from Feels Like Dancing Wartime, a Nevilluxury solo record.\nThe standout track of this disc is Golden Corsets, though Funghi runs it close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing the story right up to date is disc four, which contains the six\ntracks from Hi Alien<\/strong>, which seemed\nto be their swansong in 1989, until they emerged, blinking, into a new musical\nlandscape, with 5<\/strong>, in 2011, and\nfound that people who loved \u2018different\u2019 music still had time for Punlix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If all this wasn\u2019t enough, the real treat for fans of old is disc five,\nwhich brings together songs from three hitherto unheard live performances. The\nfirst 10 are from a planned live album at the Nashville in 1979, and are of\nexcellent quality, showing just what the band were made of, though the others, from\nKant Kino, the Hope & Anchor and Reading festival the same year, are sadly\nlittle better than bootleg quality, but are interesting as historical\nartefacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neville has also contributed unique sleeve-notes and visuals for the booklet. If, like me, you somehow missed out on Punishment Of Luxury, this is a great way to fill that gaping hole in your music collection. 7\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
