{"id":13442,"date":"2026-03-25T19:31:15","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T19:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=13442"},"modified":"2026-05-02T15:56:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T14:56:24","slug":"the-casualties-return-after-eight-year-absence-with-explosive-12th-album-detonate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ipamusic.co.uk\/?p=13442","title":{"rendered":"The Casualties return after eight-year absence with explosive 12th album Detonate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">ALBUM REVIEW: The Casualties &#8211; Detonate (Hellcat Records)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Detonate <\/em>is the 12th studio album by NYC hardcore\/street-punk stalwarts <strong>The Casualties<\/strong>, but their first in eight years, and I&#8217;m pleased to say they&#8217;re still raging hard against all that&#8217;s wrong with the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The band, formed in 1990, are hardly going to be reinventing the wheel this far into their career, but David Rodriguez (vocals), Marc \u201cMeggers\u201d Eggers (drums), Jake Kolatis (guitar) and Doug Wellmon (bass) affirm their reputation as one of punk\u2019s most uncompromising acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Detonate <\/em>is the follow-up to 2018\u2019s <em>Written In Blood<\/em> and their first release for Hellcat Records \u2014 the Epitaph subsidiary curated by Tim Armstrong of Rancid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s their second album with Rodriguez at the mic, after he took over from original vocalist Jorge Herrera in 2017, and the first for Wellmon, who joined in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/the-casualties.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"casualties\" class=\"wp-image-13321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/the-casualties.jpg?w=980&amp;ssl=1 980w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/the-casualties.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ipamusic.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/the-casualties.jpg?resize=768%2C513&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>The Casualties&#8217; 2026 line-up.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the line-up changes, they&#8217;ve lost none of their breakneck speed and intensity, nor their fury and frustration, and Meggers says <em>Detonate <\/em>&#8220;solidifies that Dave is here to stay&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Influenced by classic UK hardcore bands like The Exploited, GBH and English Dogs, they add a thrash\/crossover edge and kick up one hell of a noise over the course of a dozen tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politics, hatred, war and endless bad news are just some of the reasons why The Casualties continue to come out swinging at authorities and systems that seek to divide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Casualties - &quot;Detonate&quot;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9Le4MkYNzUA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They deal in fast, heavy riffing, a bludgeoning rhythm section and vocals so ferocious they could strip paint, with big call and response choruses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blistering title track <em>Detonate <\/em>is a scathing blast of anger suggesting we should blow everything up and start again, while lead single <em>People Over Power<\/em> is a call to action, urging us all to fight back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Latest single <em>Allies And Assassins<\/em> is about remembering who your friends are, while my favourite track <em>Brick By Brick<\/em> is a takedown of politicians on the make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only real change of pace comes with <em>Few The True<\/em>, midway through the album. It doesn&#8217;t quite follow the mould of a typical Casualties song; it&#8217;s much more melodic, in a Pennywise kind of way, with a great gang chorus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Songs like <em>Now And Tomorrow<\/em>, <em>Eye For An Eye<\/em> and <em>Wake Up, Kill, Repeat<\/em> are just as likely to make the moshpit go off as classics like <em>We Are All We Have<\/em> and <em>Unknown Soldier<\/em>. Make no mistake, The Casualties are back and have rarely sounded better. <strong>8.5\/10.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*<em>Detonate <\/em>by The Casualties is out digitally this Friday, but you&#8217;ll have to wait until July 17 if you want it on vinyl or CD.
